today is a good day. not just because it's now been 8 weeks since AVR,
but also because a new store opened in town. a special store.....it's a
"pirate" wal-mart. we're too small here to support a real one, but one
enterprising entrepreneur decided to open one without going through the
hassle of getting a franchise. i checked it out when it first opened last
month, but was not yet fully stocked.

the sign out front uses the same font and color scheme as wal-mart, but
says "BEST-MART SUPERCENTER." it's pretty common to make an exact
copy of something and change one or two letters in the name so it's no
longer a "copy." plenty of "patasonic" or "panasoric" dvd players to be had.

picked up a flyer....oh, baby, he's even got flyers!!! and they got stuff!!!
imported stuff!!!! now it's only printed in the flyer, doesn't necessarily
mean they actually STOCK the stuff, but still.

example: new restaurant opened where i useta live, several of us fur'ners
decided to try it out. the nice waitress brought us a menu...in english...
and the ordering goes like this:

this looks good, we'll have an order of xxxx.
don't have that.
okay, how 'bout this one, we'll get xxxx.
don't have that.
ummmmm, okay, we'll have the xxxxx.
don't have that.
well, what on the menu DO you have?
oh, we don't have any of that.
no? what do you have?
you have to order from the chinese menu.

and then we noticed....they had stolen the menu from another
restaurant. they didn't serve anything on it, but they had an english
menu for the foreign customers.

ah, but where was i? oh, yes, imported stuff!!

we got budweiser and pabst blue ribbon (ugh), heinekin, koestritzer, bacardi
breezers, san miguel, guinness, asahi, kirin, carlsberg chill, st.roland black,
wine from australia and chile, welches juices. and they got them pony
size metal kegs of KROMBACHER and VALENTINS wheat beer!!!

and there's more!!! they gots olive oil, imported brazilian coffee, dutch
butter cookies, european chocolates, miracle whip, mayonnaise, kikkoman
soy sauce, schwartau jams, french's mustard.

oooh, and the good stuff!!! anchor butter and cheese from new zealand,
fitaki cheese from germany, gouda and edam from holland, suki sunflower
spread, land'o lakes butter. (but reeaaaallly expensive!!)

Oh my gosh, how funny. Do you feel like you have a little bit of home now? You gotta attach more pictures. Maybe a gallery in your profile?

Wow,looks huge, they supply scooters for post heart surgerys:D

Like here at Walmart and Costco's?

This would be exercise for one day!!!!!:p;)

Well, I have two Walmarts within 5 miles of my house and another 10 or so if we go out 10 miles, and you can have them all! Lots of bratty kids running around no matter what time of day or night you are in there, 35 registers but only 3 or 4 open, all with long lines, overworked salespeople who are hard to find. Now if you want imported stuff, there's plenty! Much of it's from China!

How can we get a Bestmart?

Hey, that's neat seeing what a Walmart looks like over there! ;)

the thing is, wal-marts here look just like wal-marts back home. only
muuuuch more crowded. it's a franchise requirement that they look
basically exactly alike all over the world. the one we have here isn't
a real wally world...it's just a pirate "bootleg" copy. the real wal-marts
are in the bigger cities. this is just a small rural town of 350,000.

there is no IPR (intellectual property rights) protection here, so you can
make a copy of anything on the market to sell. well, except for beijing
2008 olympics merchandise. oh no, they cracked down on that!! what's
really weird is that there are entire full-scale production factories producing
knock-offs of japanese electronics....they even provide warranty service.

here's one of our 75-cent pirate dvd's. can be great fun to shop the
dvd stores just to read the english plot summaries, sometimes you can't
tell which movie it's describing. i like this one as they've also faked a
bar code and a proof of purchase.....for "snow white and the incredibles."

Glad you found a place that is better supplied. Hope they have lots that you like, but the main question is do they have jellybeans? Best of luck

Funny that you call a town of 350,000 rural. I guess with a bizillion people in China, that is pretty small! It seems like every town in America with 25,000 people has its own Walmart.

you'd be amazed how many sardines will fit in a small tin. these here 350k
live in an area about the size of my previous sw texas town, pop 700.
other than the main thoroughfares, there's no order or organization, just
plop a building anywhere it'll fit. so you wind up with long, zig-zag alleys,
with only three feet or so between buildings. buildings built on buildings
built on buildings. also, there are no suburbs,so when the town ends, it
ends. then you're in the fields or the forest, for another 10-15k until
you hit a village.
