Dad is finally getting released from the LTC hospital today & is doing much better. He has lost about 40 pounds but is still fighting the venous stasis ulcers on his lower leg. He had his doctor in the hospital, the wound care team, & his cardio all rallying for him to try to persuade the surgeon to go on ahead with his mitral valve replacement asap. His doctor got a call last night from the surgeon saying she is refusing to do the surgery!:confused::mad:

WHAT THE HELL! A man in bad need of a valve replacement & a top notch heart surgeon refuses the surgery! I do not understand it at all!

He has an appointment with his cardio tomorrow & hopefully he has another top notch heart surgeon or two he can refer him to. Without this surgery, it will just be a matter of 3 or 4 weeks before dad will build up the fluid all over again & have to start this process all over again!

Sorry your family is going through this. I can't be of any help but wanted to wish you good luck for tomorrow and i hope it all works out for your dad, all the best tc.

I can definately feel your frustration and sorry you have to

go through so much......prayers for good outcome with Cardio.

Don't give up. As I saw you post in a different thread, maybe the option of traveling somewhere for a surgeon might be an option. Ask his cardiologist when you see him. Be sure to find out what his medical insurance will pay for cause sometimes they have issues with going out of state. Be a pest. There is help out there for your dad, you just have to dig your heels in and make them come up with a solution. Good Luck. Your dad and family are in my thoughts an prayers. My mom had CHF for at least 25 years and I fought like a tiger for her.

I just want to echo what others have already said. Your dad and your whole family will be in my prayers. Please let us know how the appointment goes tomorrow.

I'm sorry to hear this and can imagine how you are feeling. When my son was scedualled for his 4th OHS the surgeon(who is one of the leading CHD surgeons) postponed 3 times (first was because Justin was sick so that was fine) Then the 3rd time said he wouldn't operate because of how complicated Justin is. So we went to another surgeon at a biggger Hospital (my origonal choice, but Justin wanted the other guy) and things went fine
It's hard when it is your parent, because i'm not sure how they like to take care of it. With my son I made all the calls decisions, but pretty much for both my parents heart issues, They were in control and talked to the docs ect.
I would definately tell your Dad to either call some of the leading Heart Centers and ask for 2nd opinions from the surgeons (I personally contacted cardiologists surgeon from other hospital and asked what they need to give an opinion from Justin's records usually wanted CDs of all the tests and caths, ectTHEN called his current docs and had everything sent (usually have to fill out Hippa forms ect).

It was frustrating to have the first surgeon decide not to operate, but after I cooled down, I was glad they decided to be upfront and admit they didn't want to operate instead of going ahead if they weren't sure they and their staff, CCICU could handle it.

Dad's appointment today with the cardio went fairly well. The cardio was actually surprised at how well my dad looked after a month in the LTC hospital.

The cardio knew nothing about the surgeon canceling the surgery...he said he knew nothing about it!

The doc is referring him to another surgeon, Dr. Milon Karmakar. The cardio said this surgeon would have been his first choice but he was out of the country when all this first came about. No appt has been set with him yet though.

Now, I get to try to find out a little info on this surgeon...easier said than done!

Glad things are starting to look better for your dad. Sending prayers that everything goes well.

Perhaps the delay was a blessing in disguish if your dad the "first choice" surgeon out of the deal. Wishing you the best for a successful outcome.

The cardio sent all dads records, test results, etc to this new surgeon & the surgeon's office called dad yesterday & scheduled him an appt for this coming Thursday morning.

Keep him in your prayers that this surgeon meets our hopes & is willing to do the surgery & that he can do it before dad starts having problems again...that, unfortunately is just a matter of time!

Prompt response and scheduling from the new surgeon is a good sign. I hope the appointment gives you and your dad some relief and a clear path to follow. Take care of yourself in the meantime.
