My daughter has Bicuspid Aortic Valve Regurgitation. We are going to my sisters and she has a hot tub. Typically the kids (teens) hang out in the hot tub. Is this safe for my daughter to do? The outside temps are 19 degrees F so if she goes in, she will want to be underwater as much as possible.

Do any of you use a hot tub and is it safe and should there be a time limit? We always read at hotel hot tubs "if you have heart problems, consult a dr before going into a hot tub".

Obviously we didn't think of this earlier to ask her dr, so I'm asking all of you, do you think it is safe?

Thanks in Advance and Happy Holidays everyone!

Those signs are generally meant for people with blood pressure/ arrhythmia problems. If she doesnt have problems with those she will probably be ok, especially if she is asymptomatic. I have pulmonary and aortic regurgitation and my doctors have always told me that hot tubs were fine but i should go back and forth from cold to hot cold to hot cold to hot (cold pool/hot tub/ cold pool) as this can be kind of stressful on the heart.

If you ahve doubt though I would sit it out. Better safe than sorry.

When I started seeing my cardiologist he told me to stay away from hot tub, saunas and hot bath. Now that I had surgery I asked him if I could go in these and he said sure, only if I feel faint or dizzy or weak to get out, that would be due to blood pressure.

I'm *guessing* that you meant to say "should NOT go back and forth from cold to hot to cold to hot....etc."

Once I was diagnosed with 'severe' aortic stenosis, the cardiologist cautioned me to avoid situations where I could get dehydrated as well as sudden extremes or temperature changes. I found an explanation for this on a site that states "in general, hot tubs and saunas will act as a vasodilator, and prolonged exposure may result in some volume depletion. A small minority of cardiac patients, for example, those with tight aortic stenosis, may want to avoid these sudden changes". I had never been cautioned of this previously.
