Can someone please tell me about dental visits. I have an appt. and am a little scared. How likely ate you to get an infection if you take the required antibiotics. How do you know if you get an infection. Any info would help.
Thanks
Bobbie

Bobbie, don't worry. I've been taking the antibs twice yearly for over 25 years.
My only change is that since OHS my nerves are shot, so before the dental visit I take half of an ATivan 5 mg.

I just went last week to the dentist for my "cleaning" before surgery. The dentist wrote the script for the anitbotics.....the cardio said "things have changed it is not necessary" and wrote me an order to that effect. The dentist wrote the script and I took them, just for our own comfort level. Mine is mitral valve regurg.....

I thought the cardio prescribes the antio biotics not the dentist. I just postponed my dental appt until I get more clarification. I am totally scared of endocarditis, although the recommendation of AHA is no longer to take antibiotics for routine dental cleanings, at least for people who don't have mechanical valves yet. But I am glad you are taking the precaution anyway. Better safe than sorry.

Hang on there girls, before you try to see your cardio; go see or call your dentist and see if he/she will write out a prescription.
My Dentist does it for me all the time. I phone in advance and the prescription is waiting at the counter for me. Its so quick that I can even double park on the busy street.

I heard you take it an hour before your dentist appt. Is that true
Thanks Alot
Bobbie
Yep! I'm not a pill taker (or not before this). I freaked! 4 GREAT BIG pills one hour before the appointment. It did give me the peace of feeling protected and made my dentist feel lots better.

My cardio advised me to take the meds, but it's my dentist who actually writes my script for them. When they call to confirm my appointment they always ask if I have any left and if not they call it into my local pharmacy and I just pick them up. Like others have posted, I take 4 large pills 1 hour before my appointment.
