Hello all. My AVR surgery is scheduled for next Thursday morning, September 25. I have been on the site somewhat less recently - lots to do wrapping up work life, home life, etc. and many caring people to connect with. I feel lucky to be able to do this with advance planning and with a certainty that I've researched and vetted as much as I can. I am particularly grateful to people here who answered questions and raised questions that made it possible for me to have more substantive conversations with the docs than might otherwise have been possible. There were important issues, such as the BAV/aneurysm issue, that I wouldn't have even known to ask about without the questions folks raised here.

After all the consulting, testing, etc., it appears that "all" I need is "simple" valve replacement. (The surgeon still evaluates the quality of the aortic root tissue at the time of surgery, but no aneurysms per the CT and no other known issues.) I've remained very healthy, am walking a few miles a day, and will walk the American Heart Association 5k in my home city tomorrow morning.

I will ask my S.O. or daughter to post letting people know that all is well following the surgery. Neither is a big computer person, so if you don't hear for a few days just know that this is the reason - and I will post when I can.

The best to all of you who are going through the same thing, have gone through this already, or will soon!

Leah

I just added your date to our surgical calendar, so it is really official!
Enjoy your week-end!:)

I wish you an uneventful surgery and speedy recovery. I had AVR on May 19, 2008 and feel tons better. I shall keep you in my thoughts on the day you crest this mountain you have been climbing. ;)

Hi Leah ~ My thoughts and prayers will be with you next Thursday. I hope your surgery is successful and that you have an easy recovery. Dawn-Marie

Leah,

Your fitness will certainly help. I was told by several of the nurses that the patient's that did the best, were fit going in to the surgery. Mazel Tov! You'll do fine, I bet. . .

Leah, I'm glad to read about the date for your impending surgery. You are sort of a role model for me - "taking the bull by the horns" and not waiting until you collapse somewhere, sometime, and therefore ending up with the need for emergency attention. Yes, a "Plain Jane" AVR is probably all I'll need also, but that doesn't make it any less "interesting." You'll be in my thoughts as things progress from this point on, and I have a really good feeling about your prospects.

Jim

Thank you all! Knowing that this is survivable and more has made it much more bearable.

So glad you have a date and I will look forwad to all good reports from your family.

Leah, best of luck to you, but confident that all will go well. I turned 60 this past March and had been diagnosed 7 years earlier. Had AVR July 2l, 08. Almost 2 months post op, I feel great! The waiting is the worst, as everyone has said. I was so scared, but I did not know about this site and had no one who went through it to "talk to". This group is wonderful. God Bless.
