Yesterday the little town south of us had a 16 year old collapse and die while being transported by air ambulance to St. Louis. She was involved in many school activities, she worked, and she was trying to lose weight for the upcoming prom. An autopsy revealed she suffered a heart attack from a combination of drinking 6-8 cans of red bull and taking an over the counter diet aid.
I received an email from the school nurse who had been given permission by the parents to share the news.
I didn't know the girl personally, but had been friends with her folks many years ago.

What a tragic loss!

I do wish that Red Bull and the like, along with the diet pills, were age restricted and not sold to anyone under legal age. I'm sure this girl had no clue this could happen to her.

Wow, that is very sad. Diet pills should not be sold over the counter, period.

All of my education and certifications are in Nutrition and Performance Enhancement. I consider myself an expert in Nutrition. But I can't work in that field because I can't make enough money to support the life we have become accustomed to. And the amount of misinformation that is out there about diet and exercise is so disturbing. Especially in regards to our children.

That amount of red bull consumption alone wouldn't let you loose weight. I think there is 150 calories in a can. So that is 900-1200 calories in just drinks. Let's combine the caffeine in 6-8 cans which is 480-640 mg. Now these are based on the smaller cans, not the larger one that is on shelves now. Most people don't know that too much caffeine causes stress on the central nervous system and in turn your body releases cortisol. You've all seen those commercials about the damage cortisol has on your metabolism.

Such a shame. My heart goes out to those parents. One has to wonder why they weren't more aware that she was doing this though.

**edit** I wanted to add too that one can of Red Bull doesn't have any more caffeine in it than a cup of black coffee. 10 grams of caffeine has been proven to be deadly. That would take 125 cans! I don't think the red bull is really the issue here, more so the diet pills. just my opinion. tragic none the less.

Firstly, great sadness in reading of a young life snuffed out :( Not good.

There is also a popular alcoholic drink - that is popular at Colleges & Universities - Vodka & Red Bull (sugar Free). One of the nicknames for this drink is is "heart attack".

Great idea to combine a depressant & stimulant at the same time.

Red Bull combined with various spirits is a trendy tipple for youth out on the lash over here as well.

It would be hypocritical of me, an occasional after meal cognac and espresso drinker to flag up the caffeine and alcohol combination as bad. But then I just have one of each. Todays young people seem to need a gallon.

My granddaughter is 13 and plays basketball. This season her mom stopped to buy her a drink to take to drink during the game. My granddaughter bought an energy drink. Halfway into the game she became shaky and turned pale and complained of a headache. I picked up the can she was drinking from and it contained a huge amount of caffeine. Her mother didn't know. Now its water and gatorade during the games and no more energy drinks ever. I think they should be banned or not sold to anyone under 21 like alcohol.

some of you might recall we had a young lady join VR. She was asking our opinions of Red Bull and that she used it often and enjoyed the uplift it brought to her, but as I think I recall she was also a heart patient. The members of VR discouraged her.

So sad to hear of the young girl you're talking about, Mary. Who'd have thought.

Sadly stories like this highlight the hidden traps that our young adults face today. Its hard enough trying to keep up with a teenager let alone having to be concerned about non-alcoholic drinks and OTC pills as well as all the usual suspects. My boys have been told the reasons to stay away from the likes of Red Bull , I can only hope they listen.
