So today was supposed to be when I called DeVille if he hadn't called me yet. He didn't call me, but instead of calling him, I got to see him...

As I finished lunch and headed back to my office I started feeling awful. I tried taking my pulse and it felt really slow, but I couldn't seem to concentrate enough to actually count it. So I went to the nurse and asked if she could take my pulse and blood pressure. She got out her pulse/ox and at first it said my pulse was 68, but after a few seconds it dropped to 47. It hovered right around 50 for about 10 minutes. I decided it probably would be best to call DeVille. Amazingly, I was put through to Dustin right away, instead of having to leave a voice mail. When I explained what was going on Dustin said I was probably having PVCs that the pacer was thinking were beats, but weren't actually pushing blood through the heart, thus causing the lower heart rate. But he did say I could come in and have my device checked. I told him I would be coming in. The nurse didn't feel comfortable with me driving myself, so I called Nathan and he came to get me and took me to DeVille's.

The device didn't record anything, but apparently my LV lead is having even more of a problem capturing. It's now gone from needing 6 volts to needing 8 volts (or something like that). So the tech talked to DeVille and he came in. He was not happy with the new information. He said to wait where I was and was going to go call Pearse. Unfortunately, she's in Paris (Texas) today, so he couldn't get her right away. He left a message. He's also trying to contact Dr. Hayes at the Mayo. He does not like the trend (and neither do I) and he feels it would be best to get up to Rochester and take care of things as soon as possible. When I asked if he had an idea of why I might have felt the way I did earlier in the day he didn't know what I was talking about. I explained how I had felt and he said it may have been that my LV lead had stopped capturing. So he decided to test his theory and turned off the LV. Nothing happened, so he told me to walk down the hall. Then I started feeling like crap again. So I guess that's what it was. Which means that if it continues to deteriorate I'm going to feel like crap, since they can't turn it up much higher than they already have.

I am not happy. I'm glad I went in, even though at the time I thought I might be over reacting, but I wish none of this was happening. Nathan and I have video race weekend after next and we REALLY don't want to miss it. We've participated in video race for the last 5 years and just can't miss it! I'm now waiting to hear back from either Pearse or DeVille to find out what the next step will be (and when).

---Later---

Got a phone call from the Mayo Clinic. They were asking if I could be up there for surgery next Wednesday. I asked if it was possible to wait one more week so that we'd be able to do Video Race. The secretary called Dr. Hayes and got him on the line. I asked if it was possible to wait and he said the only concern he had was that the lead would stop capturing altogether, but he couldn't predict when/if that would happen so it was okay to wait a week as long as they can fit me into the surgeon's schedule. I'm supposed to hear back from them tomorrow on an exact date. So, we should get to participate in video race after all. Just pray that the leads last me that long! I'll let you know when we have an exact date.

Niki,
I'm so sorry to hear about the new problems. I hope they can get it straitened out at Mayo. I'm sure you are not looking forward to more surgery. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Niki, I am sorry you are having this and need to go back to Rochester already. I hope you and Nathan have a really good time at the Video Races (whatever they are lol) Hopefully getting this done in a week or so will let you be able to have a good summer w/ your sister's babies, lyn

Niki,

Very sorry ... thoughts/prayers coming your way....

Niki,

I don't really understand any of what you just wrote, BUT, if you are having that much trouble, I am concerned about your LIFE and postponing correction seems RISKY to me. Just my 'gut' reaction.

Obviously my health is our priority. However, what good does it do if I'm unable to do the things I love? Things I look forward to every year...

Besides, putting it off one week shouldn't make too big a difference. It's still sooner than I'd like. Plus, it gives me time to get things organized at work for my departure. This is one of the hardest times of the year to be gone. I have to get the library closed up and there's no one else who can do it. I have reports to generate, shelves to organize and weed... I'm not worried about teaching the classes, a sub can do those things. But the actual LIBRARY stuff is where I'm concerned. The more I can do before I leave, the less worried I'll be (which is good for my health!).

I know you guys understand trying to make this stuff interfere with your life as little as possible. It's impossible to plan things perfectly (as evidenced by my assuming I'd planned things well by having the surgery at spring break), but if we can have a little bit of control, it helps us to feel less volnerable. Does that make sense?

Best wishes and prayers going out to you Niki. I know how you feel, but I would feel better if you got it taken care of sooner and would be here for many more video races to come.

For everything you've been through, I don't blame you a bit for putting it off a week, danger or not.

Yes, I DO understand where you are coming from Niki.

I was thinking I would be recovering from my third OHS by now BUT, my symptoms are not severe and I find my self caught in the usual Cardiologist - Surgeon Stand Off.

My progressive Mitral Stenosis seems to have leveled off just before reaching the severe category and the surgical risks are considerable this third time around for a radiation damaged patient on Coumadin. As with you, if this surgery is going to be the end of my life as I know it, I'd like to do a few more things before taking that "leap of faith"!

Niki, I'll be relieved for you when the next couple of weeks are past and you are all fixed up.

All too well :(.

I know how hard it can be to "make sure" this heart stuff does not interfere with life in general.... Sometimes I've been successful ... others, well, let's just say I wasn't too pleased ... he he.

After work yesterday I was even more glad I'd asked for another week. Apparently my principal wants EVERYTHING turned in (I was going to let the teachers keep the things they check out every year so that I won't have a storage issue). When I told her I may not be there the last two weeks of school, she said to make sure it gets done before I leave. There's no way I would have been able to do that if I were leaving for MN next week.

I didn't hear from the Mayo Clinic about an exact day (or any other arrangements) for the surgery. I guess if I don't hear from them today I will see if there is any way of calling them (they didn't give me a phone number). I've already arranged a sub for week after next (the whole week, since we'll also have to travel). I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that I'm not ruining things yet again by making plans...

Niki,

I wish you well and hope things all go as planned. I understand you having to do things on your schedule - we all do have our lives to live. The week before my second OHS, I was in for tests and all of a sudden, everyone wanted to schedule an emergency surgery on that Friday. I had out of town guests that had just arrived and I had not seen them for years. I refused to go into the hospital until Tuesday after they left. I figured if I had gone over a year with the symptoms that they had FINALLY decided indicated a problem, I could go a few more days. I had a great weekend and was able to go into surgery relaxed and happy.

There is no point to all of this if we cannot live our lives.

Niki, hope you have a great time before your surgery and just wanted to wish you the best of luck, my thoughts are with you. Paula

Niki:

Sorry to hear about this setback. But glad you're still on tap for the video race. Yeah, it's great to be able to keep some normalcy to our lives when they're being thrown here & there.

Niki-

Just want to let you know that I think you're a really brave gal. Certainly, you have to live your life. I have the feeling that everything will work out for you. I just wish this hadn't happened to you, as I am sure, so do you. It sounds like your Dr. is scared of your condition. That's an uncomfortable position for a patient to be in. I saw the look of fear in many doctor's eyes when trying to figure out how to treat Joe. Some of them even came right out and said they were afraid or sent him on to someone else.

But the good news is that there is always another who knows what they are doing and can help, and won't be afraid.

Enjoy your activities, and good luck with the next procedure.

Niki,

Just curious, but what is a video race? And I agree if you should do the things in life that you enjoy. If not, what's the point? Sorry about all your problems.

good luck

Video race is something that's been going on in Dallas for the last 5 years (this will be the sixth year). We've participated every year, and are only one of a handful of groups who can say this...

Anyway, what happens is at midnight Friday night all of the teams are given a theme, prop, location, and line of dialog (everyone's is the same). They have to use all four of these elements in an original movie that lasts no more than 5 minutes. The catch- all scripting, shooting, and editing must be done by midnight Saturday night. You have 24 hours to create your movie, but a lifetime of fun memories. We've had such a blast every year. None of us is in the movie industry, so we're not that great at the technical side of things, but we sure love trying! It's exhausting, but totally worth it to see our movie on the big screen. They do screenings of all of the movies in "heats," select two finalists from each "heat" and they are shown again. In the end, there is one winner from each category (solo, small group, large group). The prize isn't much more than just the pride and bragging rights of winning. We've made it to finals once, but never won. We probably never will, because we like doing comedy and everyone knows comedies never win, but we don't care. People laugh at our stuff and that's good enough for us!

*raises eyebrow*

Holy cow ... that DOES sound like fun, Niki...!

Hmmm....going to have to manage a TX trip around that event one of these years ;).
