In the South ..it is said, if you eat collard Greens and black=eyed peas on that day..you will have money for the coming year.:D I have my black -eyed peas...cornbeef/cabbage. I had to laugh, almost everyone shopping today at our local supermarket had a bunch of fresh collards in their buggies. I have never cooked them..they stink up the kitchen:eek: ..Collards suppose to be for green money..peas for coins.:D Bet Danny aka Bubba has a big mess of collards tomorrow.:D Bonnie

because of you and my sis-in-law (who is a southerner also, lives in Birmingham), I bought a can of black-eyed peas a few days ago - to have a few spoonfuls for luck!! :) No collard greens, though!

Got my black-eyed peas, too. No collards, but we'll maybe have asparagus or green beans. Rice with the peas makes it hoppin' john (what my mother had in key west)

Yep, got mah collard Greens an' blackeyed peas at th' ready, wif a side o'der of co'n bread. I'll warsh them down wif some fine old ice tea (sweetened wif Splenda--dadburn it) mebbe follered by a six pack of Bud.:p :p

ah w'd try Ross' necked helter-skelter aroun' th' tree recommendashun but doesn't reckon th' neigbo's'd approve.  Wal, ah might be able t'git away wif a dip in th' pond next t'mah Dotter's house. Gotta remember t'watch out fo' thet Aligato' though----OUCH!

Happy Geo'gia Noo Year t'all an', to all a fine night.

May God Bless,

Bubba :)

My Hoppin' John is on the stove as I type! It will be done in time to have a serving before Noon and guarantee a year of good luck! (Hey, it can't hurt!;) )

Hope our INR is on the high-side..all of our saurkaut (yours) and my cabbage..:D ..My dinner is ready..cornbeef/cabbage and black-eyed peas.didn't make any cornbread....Going to try to lose that 20 lbs. this year.:p ......Rancy..a true Southern boy will dip his cornbread in the pot-lickker..Juice left in pot from cooking collards/black=eyed peas....:D Bonnie

Since we Texans don't consider ourselves Southerners, we forego the collard greens (gag) and just have black-eyed peas, not just for money, but overall good luck. In my younger days, I remember that they would serve them on New Year's in small Dixie cups at the bars. My bil from NJ insists on sauerkraut, which falls into the same category as collard greens (gag). However, since I am deep into a chest cold, I didn't even do anything last night and have been in bed most of the day. Maybe my husband will remember to bring me peas from my sister's house. Otherwise, I'll just have to make my own luck.

Saurkaut is fermented cabbage..:D Made in large crock pots in the old days...Collards, I think are some type of kale?.......I grew up on turnip greens./cornbread..but..Mama never cooked collards. They had a New York chef on the Today Show this morning...cooking black-eyed peas and cornbread and collards. he said, you have to cook the collards to death..to get them tender.:p I have been in southern people's homes and open the door and knew what they were cooking. the smell can even get in their clothes. ..Hope you get to feeling better...I, too, have a head cold, runny nose/eyes....Have used up a box of Puffs in 2 days.Bonnie
