My MVR surgery was scheduled for March 20th and I just got the call today that I've been bumped back a week to March 27th. This has caused a lot of trouble for my family (husband is a Judge and getting the time off requires a lot of manuevering within the courts and I had family flying in that are now out the money) and I'm concerned this will happen again. Is this common? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Dee

I'm sure it happens alot with surgeons. Things come up ect. Fortunatly for mine was scheduled for 3/23 and yesterday was moved up 3/20. But it still took some time changing around the schedule we made of who was going to be watching the kids etc. I wish you the best and hope everyone can change the plan and get flights changed.

I got bumped a month, later the same day as my pre-admission. It depends on priorities. If your situation is less dire than someone else, you could get bumped.

Justin usually gets bumped one or more times. I think alot tends to depend on the hospital, Centers that do alot of ERs or heart transplants ect seem to bump more often (and to be fair I have to admit Justin also bumped other kids 2 times, and yes I felt really bad sitting next to the family from Virginia that he bumped last time)

I got bumped from "first surgery" of the day when a Donor Heart became available following a fatal Accident the night before.

That's the risk one takes when using a Heart Transplant Surgeon. Transplants take First Priority and everything else gets shuffled around. I've heard of Transplant Surgeons not leaving the hospital in 2 or 3 days.

I wouldn't want a surgeon who hasn't slept in 2 days to operate on me! Deek, I hope the change doesn't cause too much trouble. Wish you all the best.

That's an uneducated posting typical of those who chose to deride that which they don't understand or don't embrace. I tried to ignore your post but frankly it seriously pissed me off.

No offense meant or intended. I removed the offensive phrase from the description of events.

I don't remember exactly where I first heard the term,
but think it may have come from someone in the medical community.

Like in all medical procedures more pressing cases arise.

This happened to me once during a minor procedure. I got bumped by a little kid. Most hospitals will do the kids first in the morning. They consider it easier for the adults to go longer without food & water.

Let's hope this doesn't happen again. I wish you & your family well. God bless.

Unfortunately..................

Unfortunately..................

it's more common than we realize.

I hope you won't be bumped again. It's very hard on every one when this happens. It's easier for patients to cope when given an explanation why they were canceled. Hospitals don't always do that though.

All I can say is try to hang loose and go with the flow.

My very best wishes.

Very common and a pain when you have everything organised but as others have said it is always for somebody worse off than you are. Hope they can stick with your date this time. All the best.

Hello Dee and getting bumped does suck in some ways,
My surgeon broke his leg in 3 places after a car hit him.
that was a shock to me and more waiting.Who would .
Another surgeon was booked to do my surgery ,then i got bumped
while lying in hospital for 3 days waiting for new surgeon.
End result i had surgery Jan 22 HURRAY.
Bad enough the waiting is the worst in all this, but it happens
to too many of us all the time for good reasons;).
You'll likely be fine with one bump and ready to go march for
surgery. My mom came early too from a distance, ended up waiting
at our place till it was all over.
All the best:)

Hi there. I was offered a "bump" or another surgeon as I was in there, gowned up, etc.

I chose the other surgeon as I knew it would be hard to go home and then come in again.

I think it is fairly common ... more serious case or surgeon schedules or even surgeons getting sick ..... It is still a pain in the butt ...waiting is hard enough without having it prolonged .....

I got bumped, but it was hours, not days. They had originally scheduled me for surgery at 7:00 a.m., which meant I had to be there at 5:00 a.m. (two hours before the surgery). They set this time the day before the surgery. Then, about a half an hour after the first call they called again and said that I was rescheduled for surgery at 11:00 a.m. (on the same day), so I did not have to be there until 9:00 a.m. That worked out much better for me.
