Following my wife's TIA that hospitalized her for three days last week, I am regularly checking her blood pressure. Just now it was 157/74 -- not good but not astronomical like it had been. We'll keep working on it.

Meanwhile, after taking hers, I've started taking mine. Just now it was 87/43, which kinda shocked me. Maybe if my BP is running low, it can account for little bouts of dizziness I have. I see dehydration can be a cause, and I know I don't drink enough water so I am grabbling a bottle now.

My main concern is my wife's high BP -- and thanks again for all the salt-reduction ideas. That may help. But in the process, may be learning something about self too.

Got all the highs and lows right here in same household. :D

I always took Joe's blood pressure, heart rate and temp at least once a day, and had him weigh himself w/o clothing first thing in the morning. Sometimes, I listened to his lungs too. Many medical professionals told me that was an excellent idea.

I learned so much from those very simple things, I know why vital signs in the hospital are so important.

You wouldn't think it would mean much, but if you write all the vitals down each day in a little notebook, you can spot trends before they become big problems. I could spot many subtle changes in Joe's conditions and it really helped! Then you can call the doctor with solid info and get some advice, hopefully before anything rears it's ugly head.

I do the same for myself.

It is good you are moitoring your wife's bp. The bottom number for her is great. Not to high for the top number. Hope it continues. I have low bp. Yep, makes you dizzy once in awhile. Mine is not a low as yours. If that continues, may not be a bad idea to let your doc know. Best of luck for you and your wife.

I brought mine up to my cardio because before my gi bleed, it was higher, but since has been running around 90/60. He said unless I'm getting dizzy or feel faint, he's happy with it.

Now if only Superbob and Mrs Superbob could combine their BP's to get an average reading both would be perfect...
SB...your BP is certainly quite low...I for sure would be blaming the dizziness on that...if its regularly that low it could be time to get your BP meds reviewed, cant our SuperBob falling over with the dizzys. Is it worth a try to let DW test her own BP for a few days and see if she gets more acceptable readings...you might be making her anxious with your superpowers.

LOL, Ton, averages! Why didn't Superbob think of that -- it's the perfect solution. :p:p Could be used for Throw Down purposes, too. :p Better living through chemistry -- and statistics. :p:p:p

Don't worry about DW being anxious in the presence of Superbob's superpowers -- she's not the least bit awed. :p

Loved your post -- gave me a needed chuckle this morning.

I will pursue on the angle of meds and low bp and the dizzies. Could be Superbob needs his doc to reduce the meds.

Superbob,

I checked your profile and see you are on Lisinopril, as I am. I have been having episodes of low blood pressure with mild lightheadedness. My cardiologist said I could vary the Lisinopril up or down according to circumstances, but to let her know. So far I haven't, but I am keeping a record of readings just in case.

This is just to second the 'contact your doctor' thought.

Also, one time I got several scary readings and realized my manually inflatable cuff was pinching my skin so that I wasn't getting it tight enough.

Good luck to you both on both ends of the bp scale!

Thanks, Debby. I thought if a med was the culprit, it might be metoprolol. But you're right -- could be lisinopril.

Right now, I think the cause for my low BP was dehydration. But I will keep a journal and keep checking, now that checking my wife's bp regularly has given me a reminder to check my own. :)

Bob,

Sorry to be lagging behind again. Maybe this is a non-issue by now. What I meant about the Lisinopril is that you may also be able to vary your lisinopril dosage.

Again, good luck with your bp issues.

My blood pressure was low several months ago (90/40's) with similar resulting symptoms as yours SuperBob. I was only taking 10 mg., but was getting lightheaded and dizzy. I know only take 2.5 mg., but without that little dose my BP is high. So, I guess my point is that I'm with Debby and think it may just be Lisinopril. Hope this is getting better.

Thanks Debby and Wise,

My readings have seemed more in the normal range lately, and I think dehydration may have caused the low reading last week. But I have a doc's appointment next week and will ask him about the possibility of adjusting the meds.

Right now, more concerned about DW's rather high readings. She's got a post-hospital follow-up Wednesday so hopefully they can find a key (in addition to me being the salt police :D ) to getting it down to a safer range. She takes metoprolol, but not lisinopril.

Thanks, Aaron, that's my understanding too. I was told the stats show that there's a 1 in 3 chance of a major stroke within 3 months of having a TIA. Not good. Very worried about her -- her BP is way too high, fluctuates some during day but never gets down in the normal range. I am taking her to her doc today.
