All,

My husband sends you his most sincere greetings from the ICU. Today Brian had his aortic valve and part of his aorta replaced (about six hours). He is doing very well. Little sore, little disturbed by the clicking that his rib cage makes when he breathes, but everything went according to plan with no surprises.

From the time I first saw him after surgery to now, I have seen an incredible improvement. His color is back, no breathing tube, eating ice chips. Tomorrow it will probably be the breathing exercises and sitting up in a chair.

Thank you for all of the support and wonderful advice that you all have contributed. It has really helped the both of us prepare our selves for this day.

Kris (Brian's wife)

Kris,

That's wonderful news abour Brian. It is a relief just to get off that breathing tube, I know. May he just continue to improve steadily now. Give him our very best wishes....

Good news.

I was suprised after surgery that when people asked me how i felt it always seemed like i said, "great, 100% better than yesterday/lastweek".

I used that same response for the first 3 months, i always felt great and as i improved i always felt better than i did...it constantly surprised me.

The first two days are kinda ok as you are drugged, the next two days are a little rough but by the end of the first week you are ok...its constant improvements from then on.

Best of luck.

Great news - just think in a week he will be home and all this will be behind him. Isn't it amzaing how far you progress the first day after surgery = absolutely incredible. That breathing tube was nasty! Glad he is on the road to recovery. - Jim

Awesome news Brian and Kris. All the best to you both - you are doing great!

Kris,
Great news for you and Brian! You must be so relieved. If you have time for any spouse survival guidelines, my husband could use them next week...
Best wishes for an uneventful recovery (for you both:) ).

Thanks, Kris, for letting us know.
Please pass my well wishes onto Brian.

That's great news Kris! Today will be the worst day for Brian (at least it was for me) so believe me when I say each day gets better and better! I was pretty out of it the first day and just wanted tons of ice chips and basically just was in and out of a drifty little sleep...not really restful but couldn't really do anything else. Once you get out of ICU things start to feel much better! The most important advice I can give is for him to walk as much as possible in the hospital. It doesn't feel really good at first but really helps prevent blood clots, pneumonia, stroke, etc. The worst of it is behind you guys and a week from now life will seem so much different! My family really suffered that first day, seeing me on the tube, etc. but it's hard to believe 8 days later I am sitting at my computer, dressed and showered and getting ready to go to the mall for a 20 minute walk! You made it!! Congratulations!!

Wonderful to hear such good news, Kris. Please pass on our best wishes for an uneventful recovery to Brian.

Tell Brian we all said hi and congratulations on the smooth surgery! You are in our prayers.

Gob Bless
