I know that others have had their valve replacements on June 7, but I can't reflect on my surgery without thinking of Cory (whom I haven't seen around here in a C*O*O*N'S * age! )

Two years ago today, I was saying last minute good-byes to family members in the surgical area and waiting for the long promised 11am surgery.
My dear brother-in-law, probably the least sentimental person I thought I knew, told me that if he could have the surgery in place of me, he would. I recognize that was probably the most generous offer I have ever received.:)

Anyway, they got the dirty deed done, and I truly remember nothing except a nurse saying, "Mrs. Stone, we're going to take your breathing tube out now." A few hours later, I muttered, "Have you taken it out yet?" and then realized that since I was talking, they must have! :p

My recovery has not been smooth. Three months after replacement I learned that I had developed pericardial constriction; a somewhat uncommon complication that can occur after any open heart surgery. It can be corrected by surgery, but the thought of THAT operation truly leaves me feeling weak in the knees. After watering flowers in 85+ heat and 70+ humidity, this morning, I'm exhausted. I expect the cardiologist to say at my upcoming appointment, "Well, you know there's only ONE* sure-fire way to fix that!"
*grumble, grumble*

I could use some old, corny expressions to soothe myself as to why it happened to me . . . . but that wouldn't change a THING! I prefer to spend today celebrating the second anniversary of my aortic valve replacement!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY CORY!

Congrats to you both. Glad to have you around to support everyone and happy you are doing relatively well (at least what you have wrong can be fixed). Wishing you many, many more celebrations.

Congratulations, Mary. Can't say I blame you for not wanting to go under the knife (or buzz saw) again and I hope it truly is a last resort. Wishing you many more years of smelling and watering the flowers! Naps are allowed.;)

Congrats. Mary

Congrats. Mary

we remember your special blessin. Glad you can do all those lovely things. Like yard work - ugh. It was so hot here today - how hot was it? Way hotter than we want with no rain.

Enjoy every day in every way.

In case you check in, Cory - we all say hey.

Mary,
Be proud you can be vertical in the heat, the alternative sucks:)

well done

well done

I was thinking about my own experiences and they certainly know where to put that pipe. I was awake with people running round belting dopamine into me one of the lines and then they started running my hart at about 102 and I was feeling just a bit queezy but I was awake and ready to have the pipe taken out. They kept me there for 7 hrs which is small in the scheme of things. Today I was talking to my daughter 17 about living life by the day.
I remember the 5/Feb/2003 and I think of it as my new birthday the Surgeon and the team I owe a great debt. I would like to be friends with them but I don't have to be because I know to Silvana Marasco I was just work the Mitral Valve replacement in bed 3. It was great work and its now 4 years on and I am going on holiday to Europe for 3 months.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

I expect BOTH of you to CELEBRATE ... appropriately ;).

Hey Mary!
Congratulations on the 2 year milestone! Coming up on 21 months here. We can be thankful for every day of life that our surgeries have made possible. Here's to many more to come!;)

Wow George, that is awesome Dr Starr doing your next surgery 40 years later!

Did Dr Blalock do your shunt himself? I watched that movie "Something the Lord Made" recently starring Alan Rickman and Mos Def, about Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas's work on blue babies. What an amazing pair they were (and Dr Taussig) - real pioneers in heart surgery on infants and children.

Awesome.

Bridgette,
My Blalock - Taussig shunt was done in Portland, Oregon, at Doernbecher Children's hospital in 1956 by Dr. William Conklin. I don't know any more than that. I was two years old at the time:)
I have a copy of "Something The Lord Made". The movie certainly has a special meaning to me! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the development of heart surgery.
