Confused: PLS HELP!

Hi All,

I was going through my reports today and realised that it says the following:

1. Critical aortic stenosis likely secondry to a bicuspid aortic valve.
2. Moderate concentric LV Hypertrophy.
3. Mild to moderate mtral regurgation.

My cardiosurgeon said that I only have problem with my aortic valve but doesnt the last two points indicate few more?
I dont know but I am getting really tensed thinking that something is wrong with my mitral valve too or is it normal to have mitral regurgation if one has aortic stenosis?

I was advised to get Mosaic valve by my surgeon and when I asked him why he would go with mosaic he said coz its expected to have longer life span as compared to the other Tissue valve. Is this the case? Are there other ppl here who have it and can help me getting my answers.

The other problems most likely stem from the first and may reverse once the valve is replaced. As far as the Mosiac life, the word is that they do indeed last longer these days. I don't have any experience with them, so I'll let the others elaborate.

Thanks a lot. I feel much better now, couldnt sleep after going through the report.
I have been doing some research on mosaic valve but couldnt find anything great so far, will keep trying.

LV Hypertrophy, I believe, is the thickening of the wall of the left ventricle. It thickens in people with stenosis or regurgitation (I think) because the extra work it has to do. Sorry I don't know anymore about it. I remember I had LV hypertrophy before my surgery and it has subsequently dissappeared. As for the mitral valve, I was also I told I had mild+ regurgitation before my first surgery, and now I have trace. So maybe that is related. I wouldn't worry about either of these other two problems, they should fix themselves after your AVR.

Very similar experience as Brad's, here. Mitral works much better with the new aortic valve and LVH is much less now also. I hope my Mosaic lasts for a very long time. Read the Sticky notes at the top of the Valve Selection forums for more information. Take care and post again.

Aortic Stenosis will decrease the effective valve area of your aortic valve, and therefore increase the pressure in your left ventricle. This higher ventricle pressure can cause more back flow across the mitral valve (i.e. regurgitation). I'm sure your surgeon will check to see that this is improved following implantation of your new aortic valve and then access the situation at that time.

There are some centers that provide specific information about bicuspid aortic valve disease. Reading about it will help you ask questions of the doctors and determine if you are being given full attention to everything: your valve, heart, and aorta.
