I am typing this post for my wife, so here goes:

I had a recent doctor checkup. My blood work showed that my total cholesterol is 192. My HDL is 43. My LDL is 127. My blood pressure and blood sugar were both borderline high; my doctor is concerned about metabolic syndrome. I do need to lose about 20 pounds and I am working on that with the South Beach Diet, which he (my doc) recommended.

My main concern is the high LDL. He wants it under 100. If I don't get it there by June 13, I will have to go on Vitorin.

He also recommended that I walk 30 minutes every day, which I am doing.

Does anyone have any good tips on getting that LDL down? Thank you.

Cindy

Add oatmeal into your diet on a regular basis. Red beans seem to have a similar effect.

Check with her doctor, but fish oil supplements (omega 3 fatty acid) are getting a trial run in our house.

I would recommend flaxseed meal, also, but I had a nasty reaction to the raw stuff even though it is "safe" to add to you cereal. You might try buying some, roasting it and then sprinkling a tablespoon of it on cereal. Or, just use it in baked goods if you make muffins. (google it and read up on it, anyway) Oatmeal and flaxseed meal muffins with blueberries would have to be a great idea (blueberries are great anitoxidants).

Otherwise, everything she's doing sounds perfect! I'm sure she'll beat the numbers, feel much better and be snubbing those prescriptive drugs in no time!

Zocor and Lipitor are two STATINS that are effective at reducing LDL. There has been some discussion of Statins on VR.com so SEARCH for those threads.

ZETIA is a NON-statin that helps reduce cholesterol from the digestive tract and supposedly has fewer potential side effects. That combined with exercise and diet may be enough to get her marginally high LDL back under 100. I second the recommendation for Oatmeal and Oatmeal Muffins.

Oatmeal daily or Cheerios.....personally, I prefer Cheerios.

Stay away from high fat foods like cheeses, bacon, fried foods, etc....lots of chicken and fish, not much beef and two eggs once a week. When are you going back for a retest? Tyce has lowered his bad cholesterol by about 20 points in a 5 month period following the suggested diet.

Oops, I forgot.....exercise!!! Our dr. recommended at least 30 minutes daily walking.

Ev

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated!

We are going to get some flaxseed; were planning to already.

I will be able to have oatmeal/cheerios in about 1 1/2 weeks.

Evelyn, I am walking 30 minutes a day per doctor's orders. My re-check is June 13.

hi all,
joey has been trying out a few different things, including omega-3 tablets, niacin, and a product called "cholest-off". it seems that the cholestoff is really working. his cardio felt that it was fine; his bloods are good and his cholesterol (both ldl and total) initially went down markedly and then went down a bit more 4 months later. you might want to look into it (it contains plant stenols and sterols).
joey wanted to avoid medications and tried these first. ( he exercises regularly and that has been a constant in all this).
good luck and please let us know how things go.
be well, sylvia

I just had my first 3month check on how well Crestor is working at reducing my Cholesterol...I am still in shock :D , it has gone from 5.1 down to 2.6. Thats a huge drop by practically half...I know our cholesterol numbers are different to yours but somewhere I remember I saw a site that did conversions. This is my total chol.#. My Doc was soooo pleased, then he forgot to tell me the breakdown but I should have asked.

Sylvia - tell us more about cholest-off. otc?

Cindy, some cholesterol folks might have parents who pass it on to us. I check labels when shopping and try to stay away from cholesterol filled foods. I use olive oil, not veg oil. It has cholesterol, but is healthier, cholesterol-wise. You might check the web for cholesterol lowering ideas (just type in "lowering cholesterol"). It has become a subject everywhere over the years so you ought to find a lot of things. I can't take the statins so if you go on one, pay close attention to your muscles. I take Zetia and it's not a statin. It doesn't do quite the good job that statins do, but it is next best.

We hafta keep you healthy so you can keep that fella in line (the human one).

Blessins.............

Ann, you're exactly right! My mother does have high cholesterol and was on statins for many years. She's now 82 and taking Zetia because the statins finally did begin to bother her muscles. If I can just get my LDL under 100 by June 13 my doc will be happy. Thanks for the input!

Ton, congratulations on your big results!

hi wise

please let us all know about the cholestoff when you find out....sounds interesting, thanks, syl.

Evelyn, from what I can gather through my searches, cholestoff blocks the absorption of real cholesterol by "tricking" the intestinal track into to recognizing it as cholesterol and thereby letting the real stuff pass. Maybe this is how some prescriptions work, but apparently cholestoff works without the side effects of statins. It seems to be an all natural otc. We'll look today to see if you can find some. The sites I looked at advertised it made by Nature Made. Sounds like a cool product.

Sylvia, please correct any misinformation I may have picked up :) .

Hi Evelyn
If you want to try a more ntural approach I suggest omega 3 fish oil and vitamin c supplementation - though you should check this with your GP first.Read all you can about statins and cholesterol.

Hi Butterfly

We are both on Ester C and Omega 3 and have been on them probably since Tyce had his surgery in '02. I truly do believe in them. Also on chelated magnesium--Tyce, that is. and a variety of other supplements. I think I'll have Tyce ask his cardio about the cholestoff the next time he sees him.

Since about 6 months ago, Tyce's cholesterol has gone down by 20 points, and the "bad" ldl's are almost in range.....don't know if he needs the cholestoff or not.....cheerios and a sensible diet and increase in exercise work.

Cindy (thru Wise),

I know you?ve already been told this but I had the best results with the Omega 3 Fish Oil, combined with the South Beach Diet and limiting my sugar intake. At the direction of my Doc, I started taking 1000 mg Omega 3 Fish Oil three times a day. I had been on Zetia and the numbers were not coming down like he wanted. I also had not been watching my diet as close as I should.

In three months my Cholesterol went down from 235 to 189, LDL was 112 (don?t recall the earlier number), and Triglycerides went from 522  to 192. He said my HDL was within normal range but I didn?t get the number. He was very happy with the results and told me to continue what I was doing and to see him in three months.

I buy the Wally World Spring Valley Enteric Coated Fish Oil (1000 mg). Suggestion, shake the bottle to make sure it rattles before you buy. I picked up my second bottle and a couple of days later when I went to open them I had one big wad of softgels. Apparently they had been exposed to heat somewhere. Wally World exchanged them with no problem. Haven?t had that problem since.

Good Luck and,

May God Bless,

Danny :)

cholestoff

cholestoff

hi all,
naturally, before you use anything i'd recommend running it by your doc.
here is the site for the cholestoff: http://www.naturemade.com/ProductDatabase/prd_prod.asp?productid=62

as i mentioned, joey has taken omega 3 capsules, prescription dose niacin and now the cholestoff. he has omitted one at a time and seems to find the cholestoff to be very effective in lowering cholesterol.
i have since spoken to numerous people who take it and find the same results.

the following is a compilation that my brother, len, put together. he, too, has high cholesterol issues (genetically) despite being very fit, great shape, strong runner.
i have passed this on to numerous people, as he does research on everything he takes and does before embarking on any project.
please MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR DOCTOR IN THIS, especially at the end (red yeast rice and tea); some of these things are contraindicated for coumadin takers and for heart patients.
sorry that it's so long:

Here's a list of the supplements I have come to believe in. Recognize that different things will work for different people, and be sure to involve your general practitioner even if these are over the counter:
1. a good multivitamin. I take NOW Adam Superior Men's Multi (GMP certified). It has the hefty doses of the B vitamins that I seek, but in a better proportion than many of the multi's out there. It aslo has 200 mcg Chromium and 200 IU of Vit. E
2. Nature Made Cholest-Off -- plant sterols/ stanols. also referred to often as Beta Sitosterol (a large component of sterols/ stanols). take a tablet 30 mins. before a meal -- hinders the absorption of fat in the intestine. I think this is one of the best supplement I take, with the most observable results. While I'm a fan of Nature Made products, I know that Atkins makes this, too.
3. Schiff Niacin (Flush Free) (500 mg). Schiff is another high-quality product. Large dosages of B6 have been found to be helpful to lowering cholesterol, though they can strain the liver. But 500 mg (500 plus another 50 from the multivitamin) is not a high dosage relative to the dosages in the studies. The directions on the bottle may recommend a higher dosage, but I advise just taking 1/day.
4. Nature Made Fish Oil Omega-3/ Omega-6 1200 mg. When I have fish for dinner, I take a flaxseed oil capsule instead, but I've gotten the impression that more benefit accrues from the Fish Oil. (I used to also put a tablespoon of ground flaxseed in my oatmeal in the morning, but I've gotten lazy of late.).
5. Drink lots of tea. Green tea and black tea are good, but there's another tea called Jamaica, made from hibiscus flowers. It's supposed to be GREAT for reducing cholesterol. The problem is that I have not been able to find true Jamaica tea, which is made predominantly from the calyces of the hibiscus flower and then has some dried petals in there for coloring, too. The teas that I purchased on the web turned out to be black tea with some hibiscus flowers in it (from Adagio.com) and hibiscus tea made from the flower petals (from Uptontea.com).
In the past, I've taken lots of other stuff. Policosanol gets a lot of press, especially for reducing LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. But it didn't seem to help me much. Plus, the study everyone references was conducted in Cuba, and Policosanol is derived from sugar canes, so I'm skeptical. Avoid Gugullipid -- recent studies show it to be worthless, at best. Garlic pills didn't help me much.
I looked up relevant studies relating to all of the things that I take. You should do the same, and speak with your doctor before taking anything. Good luck.
Len _P.S. Give the above an honest 6 month try. If the above don't do enough, then consider adding red yeast rice to the regimen:
6. Now Red Yeast Rice 600mg with CoQ10 30mg -- probably the most controversial thing I take. Because this contains a statin -- lovastatin (in Mevacor), you MUST get your doctor's okay first and have your blood checked at least quarterly for possible liver damage. I take just one capsule a day before bedtime, and I have found it to be miraculous, even in what turns out to be a much smaller dosage than if I were to take a statin prescribed in pill form by my doctor. The instructions on the bottle might advise a larger dosage, but a single capsule a day has worked wonders.

hope this helps.
stay well, sylvia

Danny, thank you for your input about the omega-3 capsules. Boy, your numbers came down really well! I'm going to ask my PCP about the fish oil capsules and cholestoff on monday. Thanks again. God bless you; Happy Easter!!
