I have been so busy with work and renovations at home that I have not been able to run for the last six weeks. Today I get out there and, to my great surprise, I best my last time by twenty seconds for a 2 mile run! My AVR surgery was in February.

I can only assume this is the result of remodelling of the heart itself. Pretty incredible! It makes me wonder if I should just lay low for a few more months and let it complete its work before I start pushing my limits with exercise.

Way to run Randy :) Sounds great! It can really blow the mind when you see something so concrete like that! I LOVE that word now...remodeling.... ;)

Do you have another post op echo coming? You keep us posted, kay? Nathan and our daughter have one 2nd week in July....

Hi Randy -

Not just "possible," but expected, IMO. You are only 5 months out, which isn't very much time at all. I don't know if laying low provides any advantages, but I expect that you will continue to make gains over the next few to several months that have as much to do with recovery as they do with training.

It's good to see you are making/enjoying progress!

Cheers,

Great job on the 2 mile. I'm about 3 1/2 months Post Op and almost back to were I was Pre Op running wise. I would say keep on, no use in laying low. I keep pushing it every week and my heart is responding amazingly. I think not only does it have to remodel itself but it has to re-adapt to every situation or activity your involved in Post Op that you were involved in Pre Op. It's like it has to learn how to behave all over again. Like when I first starting jogging again Post Op my heart was all over the place, beating irradically. Now, it's settled down and is back in sync with jogging and it's better than ever. It's like I had to RE TRAIN my heart. Maybe that's a better way to put! :)

Keep up the good work!

Outstanding!

Outstanding!

I've been erring on the side of caution and it's working for me. Good on ya!

This is fantastic and extremely encouraging for the folks who think a mechanical valve puts you into a veggie mode. Nope, you're back on track with energy to burn.

Best wishes,

It certainly is incredible to feel healthy again. When I was diagnosed with my condition I honestly never thought I would run again. And now I'm feeling better than I have in years. I'm back to bicycling, lifting weights and running with my cardiologist's blessings.

I have to admit I'm a little self conscious about my scar in public. But other than that and the tiny pill I have to take every day, my life is 100% back to normal.

Amazing

Amazing

Your recovery sounds amazing to me. I've been feeling so rundown and fatigued for the past two years that the possibility of an active lifestyle seems so remote. On my nuke stress test I didn't get to use the treadmill but was chemically stressed. Yoikes! What a feeling. I am so looking forward to hiking again. I had been planning a cross Grand Canyon hike a few years ago but realized I couldn't hike to the corner store without having to stop to catch my breath. Maybe I'll treat myself to a mountain bike when my surgery is over (with my surgeons blessing of course).
