I am having a AVR Wednesday and am getting a mechanical valve, therefore will be on coumidin.. Im wondering how that will change/affect my menstration(something I could easily live without), my periods tend to be very heavy and are either clotty or with very thin discharge and so Im wondering how the coumidin may affect that and what,if anything, is recomended to make it easier..

The upper blue bar has a search function. Please use that to find your answer. The question has been hotly debated over the years. You will find TMI (too much information) on the subject.

He is correct.. it's been a hot topic off and on.. myself being one of the requestors of info from time to time.. personally, i've discovered that the opinion of whether or not coumadin affects (makes worse) a woman's period depends on who you talk to.. each dr has a different opinion, and solution.

outside of a hysterectomy, i've been on every type of birthcontrol to try and control it, or it worked but didn't like the side effects.. as mine got worse shortly after my AVR, Drs assumed (not verified thru ultrasound) that it was the coumadin.. 3 yrs and several drs later.. finally OB did a ultrasound.. fibroid!.. so my GP was correct (his belief is 2% coumadin, 98% something else going on).. OB then put me on Depo shot.. NEVER, EVER GO ON DEPO.. I did one 3 month round in sept of last year.. just now getting it out of my system.. I'll spare eveyone else by not going into my long diatribe of why I hate depo... but feel free to PM if you like more details.. but one thing that does work for me is bio-identical hormones.. so far I haven't needed to use it on a regular basis, but tested it out one month.. it does work.. I use a progesterone cream (like depo without the side effects) twice daily just as I would take the pill.. but don't use just any OTC - go to a natural pharmacy or whole foods as the quality is better.. you need a standard grade formula.

this is just my story of what worked and didn't work for me.. hope it is of some help.. feel free to PM if you like..

Grace,
You are lucky, Al answered your question, even if ever so tactfully.
He usually doesn’t answer this although he is a recognized national expert. That is because in the past there had been two schools of thought here on this
topic- one that think Al is a professional and gives his best clinical opinion after
researching the data and generally finds no proof that warfarin increases or prolongs flow. The other side thinks he is a sexists, woman hating jerk who doesn't care to listen to their personal data to form the basis of a thesis supporting the idea that of course it has to warfarin(the EVIL drug).

Since a large scale study of this would cost money, but be simply to do, no one would make money on the study, it won't be done.

My own feeling is that everybody has a different reaction to surgery and to warfarin, that is why we take different doses. You may or may not have a
difference in your flow.

Now that we have the audacity to give an opinion as a man, Al and I will put on our helmet and flax jackets and head for the nearest foxhole before the INCOMING!

Well, being female, I can comment from first hand experience.;) :D ;) I do not care what any studies show, I had a longer, heavier flow after I went on coumadin. No relief until my hysterectomy in 1988 - best decision I ever made.

Now, rumor does have it that prostrate problems causing urine restriction is just a myth.;) :D ;) :D ;) :D

Any room left in that jet?

I'm with Gina. My period got heavier at age 29 after Coumadin and it's only gotten worse with age. My husband knows better than to debate the Coumadin/Heavy period thing with me. So guys, put on your body armor! LINDA

Those pictures remind me of two guys I picked up in Viet Nam. One was burned on his face and one on his hands. While transporting them to the hospital, I asked what happened. They were in a helicopter gunship firing rockets when one of them jammed. The guy burned on the hands said, "He looked down the tube just as I hit the back of the rocket with a hammer."

I'm not hijacking the thread just letting you know that I've been through worse than having someone disagree with me.
