I really didn't plot out last week to generate comments about what this little corner of ValveReplacement.org means to a good many folks, but having come back after a (very) brief break and after reading the comments, I decided it really doesn't require a lot out of me to continue staying this course with Staying the Course as long as it has a place. So good wishes on a fresh start and new week.

I am not a censor or screener or even a moderator -- I just decided to step in here four years ago when the Throwdown had run its course as a weight-loss competition. So feel free to say what you want about what's going on in your life or life generally -- of course it's good to mix in heart-related news/info along the way in keeping with the mission of this site.

Apologies for getting out of sorts from time to time. I will try to stay on a more even keel. There are stress and strains as we all have -- my wife has some very major dental work coming up. She is some years ahead of me (won't say how many) so I worry about her.

I'll be mixing and matching rec center and fitness club to get in my quota of weekly core fitness classes. My clothes are fitting better, I have energy, and I got an unsolicited compliment from my wife's female dentist on how fit I looked the other day. So I will put all that on the plus ledger.

Okay, may not be around a lot this week, but wanted to get things started. Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Cheers,

Superbob So glad you're continuing with the Staying the Course thread !

Sorry to hear your wife has some major dental work coming up. Dental work is so stressful. We never seem to get away without something dental. I envy my son who at 29 has never had any dental work, his teeth are perfect yet he eats a load of junk and probably brushes his teeth only once a day. I put this down to him having very strong teeth from a) having flouride as a child, b) not eating sweets other than chocolate when he was a child, and c) having a reasonable diet when he was a child. I think the foundation of our teeth is what must make them good in adulthood. I had a junk diet and the worst kind of chewy sweets as a child - by the time I was six years old I'd had extrations - I think I only have about five intact teeth left in my mouth now, all the rest are crowns, bridges or massively filled.

Can you empty some of your message box SB please as I need to send you a PM.

Hi everyone, fighting tooth and nail to pull my mental health and eating together. I know "what to do" in terms of eating so I don't need any help about that. What I need is help to "do what I know." I would love some actionable tips to get good meals and snacks on the table and crappy food out of my mouth. I hear "it's easy" but for me it's not. Was it always easy for you? Am I missing some obvious ideas, intermediate steps or quick wins that can at least help me move forward?

Yours in vulnerability -- remember, I am a beginner, and where some of you are at eating-wise is intimidating. Feel free to ask questions of me if you are willing to provide customized advice.

Thanks!

Welcome to the week, all! Got on the scale this morning and was down a pound. Very happy about that after being plateaued (sp?) for two weeks.

Sadness in our community this weekend following the mass murder at Santa Fe HS. My granddaughter attends Dickinson HS and the schools are rivals. Way, way too close to home.

Honeybunny, the sadness felt all across the land must be magnified many times to be as close to where this atrocity occurred as you are. We need to find ways to keep our schools secure and all our children and grandchildren as safe as possible. Thinking best thoughts for your community as it comes together and starts the healing process.

Don't know what to add to the sentiments regarding Sante Fe. As a father of five, I feel for all the family's and try not to worry too much when my children head out to school every day.

Still coughing. Trying a couple of suppressants. I think ultimately it will come down to just waiting this one out. I'm four weeks in. My wife, who's quite brilliant, has her diagnosis for me and says it's a high side of 10 weeks. Good grief. I'm hoping the prescription strength suppressants will provide enough symptom relief that I can get back to the gym this weekend and maybe get a ride or a swim in.

On the Plantar Fasciitis front, I purchased some Oofos (sandals) to wear around the house and when I'm not in public at the office. They are comfortable. Much easier to walk around with them. I appreciate the suggestions on the inserts. We have a local running store that I've got some ideas from as well. I'll likely pick some of those up as well and between various appropriate footwear, be back on my feet in no time. Pun intended.

A long, long time ago, in my running days, I had planter fasciitis too. All I recall is that a foot specialist made orthotics for me, they were expensive, and they did eventually help. But I don't know that inserts recommended by a knowledgeable running store wouldn't help just as much. Anyway, good luck with that, and to saying farewell to that persistent cough soon.

Holiday weekend is upon us, and I bet many of our gang have getaway or staycation plans. Looking forward to hearing all about the adventures next week. Meanwhile have a good Memorial Day in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms.

Cheers...
