Apparently medical research isn't as high a priority as I had hoped.

And I bet these numerous tax-payer funded organisations are made up of petty bureaucrats on the gravy train. It's not how research 'works', guys.

If you say so. There is a lot of research done by for profit companies if there is a solid bet on return but there is a lot of medical research needed that is ignored as it doesn't add to the bottom line. As in the pharma companies would rather develop a new diabetes or erection pill than a badly needed new strain of antibiotics as they are not profitable. Or rare diseases. It's pretty obvious you fell free to write whole groups of people off as "petty bureaucrats" if they have any government connection. The internets initial research was funded by the U.S. government, I know plenty of private organisations with bureaucrats on the gravy train. A few people I know who work for the insurance "industry " spring to mind.
What exactly are you shaking your head at chief?

The private for profit market is great for some things but not all. The government isn't for profit so the theory is they would be more willing to 'invest' money into medical research that isn't necessarily likely to bear fruit or ever make a profit. Call it a moonshot. There are some things that are the right thing to do even if there isn't money in it.

No, organisations like the NIH provide the 'operational framework' that 'enables' research. My guess is that there are 30 strap-hangers for every scientist. And... I bet they make their lives a living nightmare. Then again, the government can cut through the layers of bullshit and fund the research directly.

Anyways, faux outrage aside, this is what a bloated 'umbrella organisation' looks like:
            https://www.nih.gov/institutes-nih/n...ation-services
            https://www.edi.nih.gov/people/sep/lgbti/research
            https://www.edi.nih.gov/people/edi-365

Just so you know how your taxes are being invested. People do research and these bludgers get the credit.

Madonna should be here any minute.

So you're telling me large organizations have waste? Thanks for the heads up. We build tanks then park them fresh out of the factory in a boneyard to rot.The solution to that issue is to give them more money though.

Just cutting the budget won't eliminate the waste , at best you'll end up with a shrunken version of the organization with the same ratio of efficiency to inefficiency. The bureaucrats won't eliminate themselves so it's more likely the research will decline. I don't know what you mean about the government can fund the research directly. If you mean send money to the universities and such then obviously there will have to be some sort of government institution that decides where to send the money. All organizations work that way, someone comes up with a great idea and their boss takes the credit. Either way your opinions are yours I just would like to know why you were shaking your head?

Well that's a real risk. The whole thing becomes a self-serving white elephant, which is exactly my point. It's not really about research is it? The only way it could work is someone going in and throwing out all the strap hangers.

Universities usually advocate directly for funding. These guys were the middle-men, and woe betide if you didn't adhere to their ideology. Read between the lines and follow the money trail.

Someone removed my post, which I thought was benign, so it kind of makes the whole dialogue meaningless.

Oh ok, I missed your question. Shaking my head, because we have the same problems here. We call it a bloc vote.

Yes, a government 'office' to distribute funding, but 18000+ non gender-specific employees? Come on. I'm sure they can absorb the funding cuts if they really, really tried. If they were interested in objective research they'd sack themselves.

Yeah, people with different reproductive experiences yada yada. You know what they're talking about don't you? And guess who's paying?

You obviously don't think investing in research on the effects of toxic masculinity on trisexual bees is important. You can't put a price on diversity. Show me the money, fascists.

I'm not saying I agree with every cause that's being funded. You can cherry pick anything. You can cut all the funding to the FDA,EPA, NIH, meals on wheels for seniors etc and won't amount to a pimple on a flys ass in regards to the budget. Sarah Palin mocked 'fruit fly research ' because she doesn't understand things of a scientific nature as she's a biblical creationist. That's where all the answers are anyway. This isn't taking politics out of science it's just changing where they are. For some reason we are now dedicated to the burning of coal as our future energy source out of some misguided nostalgia. Natural gas is cheaper and cleaner ,that's whats killing coal not refusing to allow coal companies dump their waste directly into rivers and streams. They chop the tops right off mountains using heavy equipment they don't need thousands of miners anymore. The relevant government agencies are now going to just copy and paste right from ExxonMobils website so don't kid yourselves this is making things objective. They say climate needs more research and then they yank all funding for it. It has nothing to do with money it's a political statement. The debt wasn't an issue when we were burning truckloads of money in Iraq.....

I bet this costs a few dollars and I'm quite sure there are more than a few 'strap hangers' feeding at the trough.
