hey I am interested to know if others with an ascending aorta anuerysm have experienced a dry unproductive annoying cough?

The only thing that fixes it short term is prednisone and I have just recently tried codeine phosphate tablets, which also works, but dont want to rely on drugs long term. So I tried for 6 nights then am off it to see how long it takes before the cough comes back!!

I know I am only 9 days post op but I had a persistant cough that people always took for a smokers cough. Since the op I have lost the cough.

Yes, I called it the "heart patient" cough! But mine wasn't constant, as yours seems to be -- yours must be bad, to need to stop it with medication.

hey thanks for that. I only go on medication when it gets so bad that it is disrupting my sleep and I get exhausted. Its interesting to see that others have had the same thing, yet my specialists dont seem to want to dwell on it, guess its cos I am a complex case!

Thats how I was diagnosed

Thats how I was diagnosed

I was diagnosed after a chronic cough that hindered my ability to speak. After diagnosis however the cardiologist seemed not to associated the cough with the diagnosis -- go figure,

Yes, prior to surgery I also had a dry cough that consisted of a single hack each incident without control. These incidents would occur maybe less than six times a day and were never continuous. The cough was gone after surgery.

Hi guys I need to share with you that I did get rid of the continuous dry unproductive annoying cough, that I ended up being put on prednisone on three different occasions, and after the last lot of bad cough, I then tried codeine phospate for 6 nights in JULY 2008 and it has not returned since.
We wondered too if being on beta blockers and ace inhibitors to bring my blood pressure down also helped the cough that may have been caused by the anuerysm.

Ace Inhibitors are notorious for producing "dry unproductive coughs" after a few weeks.

Some are worse than others and many doc's will simply switch your Rx in hopes of finding one that won't produce those irritating symptoms in you. You may also want to ask your Pharmacist which Ace Inhibitors are less prone to producing coughs.

Good to hear that cough has finally gone...
Have you scheduled surgery yet or are you still doing the rounds...I havent heard from you in a while and was wondering how things are going?

Hi Tonia

Yes I have been quiet haven't I? My last scan in Aug reveals I am stable...therefore no surgery on the agenda. My cardiologist reckons they will consider it when I reach 5.5cm, which I totally disagree with. At the moment, I am keeping good health, which is a bonus. Although my Bp is 125/80 I think my cardiologist wants me down to 100! where I am slighly dizzy so that they can balance it out. I am no where near being dizzy.
How are you keeping? And your boys? I was devastated to read of Debora's passing, and no doubt you were too.
Take care,

I have always or, almost always had a chronic horrible cough but it was never blamed on my heart. I don't have an aortic aneurysm. I did have a bicuspid aortic valve that was replaced and a pulmonary artery outflow tract that was aneurysmal and replaced along with a pulmonic valve that was replaced and still the cough remains??? WHO KNOWS :D
