I've noticed that several times if I pause for several minutes as I am thinking while preparing a reply to a PM, when I try to send the reply the system tells me I am not logged in. I must re-log in and (hopefully) paste the reply from the clipboard back into the message window to send it.

Does the BBS software automatically log us out if there is no activity for a pre-set period of time?

I don't know how Hank has it set up, but I can tell you that I've seen people appear to be here that are not. It seems to be about a 12 to 15 minute period before they no longer show. In short, I suppose it's possible.

Bonnie, when you send or reply where does it take you from there? You may have a corrupt cookie, but I don't know. Can you maybe be more specific?

If it's similar to a conferencing system I used to be sysadmin\engineer for, unless you actually log out, the board has no way to know if you're really here. It just times out if you don't post or click on anything.

All this seems related to my original question, but not the same. What I keep running into is this: If I am replying to a PM but get interrupted before I can send it, when I go back to the window the PM is there and I can "finish" composing it, but when I click "send" the system tells me I am not logged in. When I log in, then go back to PM, of course the message reply is no longer there. Aaaaaaaaaaaggghhhhhh! I finally got into the habit of copying replies to the clipboard if I get interrupted, then I can just paste them back when I re-log in.

Yuk! (But not so serious if you expect it to happen. . . )

The only thing I can think of to tell either one of you is to

1. Go into your user control panel-edit options and make sure the following are set to yes

Automatically login when you return to the site? (uses cookies) yes no
Browse board with cookies?
Clicking yes will use cookies to keep your id for this session. Clicking no will send it through the links. (Selecting no may cause problems when sharing links with people behind the same proxy as you)

2. Delete your current forum cookie and relog in.

If that doesn't fix it, I haven't the foggiest idea what will. :)

In order to not lose your post, just in case something happens, block it and cut - then if it doesn't go you haven't lost it - when you go back in just paste in the new message. I use ctl c to cut and ctl v to paste and as long as you don't ctl c something else, you keep the orig cut material til you cut new stuff.

Another thing that just struck me when I was leaving, go to start/settings/control panel/internet options, open internet options and go to the general tab and click settings. Make sure that "Check for newer versions of stored pages" is set to Automatic and if your using IE 6, PM me and I'll tell you how to set up cookie control.

Now that was funny Chris. It put a smile on my face. Ross I always delete my cookies but I never have a problem getting back to anything. Why is that? I have only had this computer for a year and am very much still in the learning faze. I have come a long way but have a long way to go. Bonnie, Ross would never want to get rid of you. He needs you.

Peg, do you have to sign in each time you come back? Some cookies you'll want to keep like VR or other forums you visit, banks, etc., others can go out the window. Advertising, tracking, nasty ones etc,.

I never have to sign back in. I have VR on my favorites. There is one cookie that I can't delete. It says that it is for operations. It says Index on it.

I think your speaking of Index.dat and you don't want to delete it, but it is possible to delete. You don't want to do that unless things are really corrupted. There is a way though.

Hitting F8 after Bios posts but before windows starts up will give you a list of options, safe mode is one of them.
To delete the temp IE files use the same method while booting to get the list of boot options, but choose command prompt from the list.

When you get to the command prompt type the following commands one after the other, but hit enter after each line.

smartdrv
deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1
deltree /y c:\windows\cookies
deltree /y c:\windows\temp
deltree /y c:\windows\history

Remeber to hit [enter] after each line.

Upon rebooting new Index.dat files will be created. :D
