Greetings folks and welcome to another week of losing:D ....We have several new members throw their hat into the ThrowDown ring, welcome !!!!.....:)

In this weeks thread I would like to see some posts on what this thread means to you and your quest for weight loss and a healthier lifestyle....Reflection is a powerful tool....it can flood us with gratitude and/or renew our resolve for action:D ....

I seldom dole out praise and thanks to individuals for fear that someone may feel left out or unapprciated...each and every ThrowDowner is responsible for the success of this thread and every ounce that I have lost and I thank you...But I want to give a special kudo to SuperBob and Mary(the Ref)....Though my name is in the title, these two have been especially instrumental in keeping this going and to it's success....thank you.

Enough of the mushy crappola:mad: ;) ......Get on those scales and report in....good, bad or ugly accountability is a big part of the name of this game:)

Goodness, and Superbob was poised to use the excuse that his son's chocolate lab puppy ate the scales this week, and now The Chimp shovels it thick about Superbob's contribution.

Scoffers will think that's the equivalent of "the dog ate my homework" excuse, but those who have had chocolate lab puppies will understand. This one has pulled such stunts as chewing up a glass water pitcher and busting DW's favorite flower pot into smithereens, not to mention eating my deck and assorted trees.

So eating the bathroom scales is not a stretch. :p Nevertheless, Superbob will have to find a way to get weighed (maybe he'll weigh the puppy instead :p ) so he can keep faith with the multitudes here -- though the stats may not be pretty. :o

Aha! A great question...what does this thread mean to me!

It's like a watchbird watching over me. I think of you as a group and your faces (or avatars, or my imaginings of you anyway) pop in every time I start to go astray. Now, a lot of the time, I dodge those images and cheat on my plan to lose weight....but the next time you are all back there watching over me and it really, really helps.

Haven't hopped on the scale yet and probably won't. We are headed to Seattle tomorrow for a Mariner's game and time with our middle child. We're feeling broke these days, and that's good so we won't go out to extravagant restaurants (probably sushi...well....and a hot dog at the game??) My latest self-protective device is to cut everything in half....half as much orange juice in the morning, half a cup of coffee, half of that donut, half of my snack, etc.

Yesterday I went in to see my GP about some skin annoyance. She is a lovely, barely 40 if that, young woman and mother. I just love this doctor (some of you will remember me mentioning her before). Anyway, I hadn't seen her for almost a year and I HAVE lost over 20 pounds since then. She smiled and looked at me and said...Wow, how is it that you look younger each time I see you!! Now THAT was a great compliment! Made my day! Also made me realize that she had seen me quite often in the year prior to my surgery and I think I looked really sick that year (espeically looking at photos)

So here's to GOOD HEALTH along with our ambitions and goals for weight loss. LEt's not forget that what we are doing is also a wonderful way to maintain our good health!

I'll try to be more regular around here. Think of you guys...you're always hovering....but it a good way!!

:D Marguerite

We just returned from a week on Maui, and I am astonished to report I only gained 2 pounds!!!! It's either all the walking or my scale is broken. It certainly is not because I behaved myself because I didn't--there are seemingly no veggies to be had on Maui, but there are certainly Hula pies and chocolate cakes. Oh, and fish and chips, too.
But ick, I don't feel as good as I do when I eat right, so I am happily back on my WW Core starting this morning, and want to shed the 3 lbs I am carrying above my maintenance weight.
I'll post a couple of pics as soon as I download the camera (sorry, no bikini pics ;) ).
Start wt: 169 ish
goal wt: 132
maintenance wt 125
current wt 128

Inspiration, accountability and most of all laughter!!! I'm not weighing these days, but trying very hard to keep on track. (I'd been so good, and then our anniversary was Friday, followed the next day with a ride to our favorite biker bar where they make incredible sandwiches).

If I didn't come to VR for anything else, I know I'd still come for the Throw Down.

VR.com is a wonderful thing, the support of this community is in my opinion, amazing and divinely inspired. It has calmed an untold numbers fears and tears. I can not begin to image the void that would be left if it ceased to exist.

Now as far as the Throw Down goes….it has added many things to my life….accountability, more laughter, more humor, better health……but the best of all is that I have grown very close to several members…it has allowed friendships to blossom and grow…it has allowed me to feel that I have known some for years when we have never, and may never meet……I love you guys……

End of mush…..

Accountability seems to be a common benefit of our Throw-down...Knowing that I want to report in each Friday makes me eat more sensibly and somehow have avoided the temptation to over-indulge on my favourite treats. I would like this feeling of dedication to extend to my commitment to exercise but alas it hasnt happened yet.

I am also avoiding the scales at present...hoping to add exercise to my routine of healthy eating then I may begin to weigh-in again....I havent lost or gained weight and it was just getting boring and uninspiring to weigh the same each week.

My most favourite part of this Throw-down is seeing the dedication and successes of our peoples here who achieved great things.

Hmmm.... What does the Throw Down mean to me??? It has certainly helped me stay on track (or get back on when I derail). Not to mention the oodles and oodles of laughter! :D

This week I've done amazingly well... At least I thought so. When I ate I thought "What would make me feel good when I report in to VR?" And for the most part I did that (even ordered a salad at the fast food restaurant I drove through for lunch today!)... Until this evening. :( Nathan's sister came into town and we met at Snuffer's (a greasy burger joint famous for their fried potatoes drowned in cheese, bacon, green onions, jalapenos, and ranch dressing). It wasn't my choice and when I heard I wondered what in the world I was going to be able to order and feel good about. Nathan asked if I wanted to split a burger and some cheese fries. I agreed and though "Perfect. I'll just eat half a burger and a few of the fries." I should have known better. I ate- no inhaled- my half of the burger, then proceeded to stuff my face with more than half the fries! :( Now I'm way full and regret agreeing to the fries. Besides over eating, I know the sodium content was way high... I'm not hopeful for tomorrow's weigh in. :(

Despite this I am certain I can get back to eating right. With all of you as my conscious, I know it's possible! :D

Niki....don't let one meal get you down...hey, you could have had the whole burger as well, and you didn't:)....There are always going to be opportunities to overdo...

This weekend with two mothers day dinners...is one example....one thing we (me and DW)need to change is the fact that just about all of our social activities involve eating, and usually not on plan and to excess....don't know what to do about it but something has to change:confused::confused::confused:

Gee,
I'm offline for 18 hours and I miss the mush that our Fearless Leader is dispensing! Throw some more of that mush my way!:p

Thanks Cooker, for the nice words, but all I do is represent fair and balanced regarding banned substances!;)

Congratulations Niki on staying the same, and congratulations, Cooker, on your two pound loss! You are really back on track, and that helps all of us.:)

I'm down 3 pounds from last week, so I'm happy.

I am having major trouble with my computer, so if I don't post later on to congratulate our other losers, it's only because I can't.:(

Ref, down 3; Cooker, down 2; Niki, holding steady -- all great, way to go, folks. :)

I am up a couple of pounds, and down in mood. Now both knees seem to be degenerating and that makes it hard to get productive exercise right now. I return to the doctor May 15 and hopefully we can make some kind of game plan.

Sorry to be a dark cloud. Superbob is not earning all that mush that was ladled out yesterday. :(

Ok its only been a few days but heres my weigh in.
Starting weight 103kg (227.07lb)
Last report 88.5kg (195.1lb)
Today 80kg (194lb)
Loss - 0.5kg (1.1lb)
Total loss - 15kg (-33.07lb)

I thought I was doing poorly in the weight loss department.
The folks here seem to support each other with their loss and that is just what I need now.
I have been fluctuating for some time at about 90kg (198.4lb)
But the enthusiasm here has spurred me on to new losses.
Heres to being the biggest looser ( I hate that show)

Seriousely the more I loose the better I feel and the encouragement helps no end :D

What the ThrowDown Means:

per Wise - it means friends, good food, fun, support, and medicine via laughter.

per Cindy - I enjoy everyone's comments throughout the week and getting to know each one a little bit. The camaraderie around losing weight is great! We go to our WW meeting on Tuesdays, but having this weigh-in report to look forward to on Friday is a real extra boost.

Weigh-In:

Cindy - I'm ready to tell my actual weight now. I'm down enough, I'm not quite so embarrassed.

Beginning Weight: April 7, 170.4 (I'm only 5'1")
Last Week's Weight: 162
This Week's Weight: 159.8
This Week's Loss: -2.2
Total Loss: 10.6

Wise - OK, I guess I'll follow suit and tell my dirt.

Beginning Weight: April 7, 204.8
Last Week's Weight: 197.6
This Week's Weight: 195.4
This Week's Loss: -2.2
Total Loss: 9.4

Congratulations to all losers, maintainers. SuperBob, this too shall pass; prayers & best wishes for your upcoming doctor's appointment.

Cindy & Wise:

You two really are on a sensible pace --- 1 or 2 pounds a week is about ideal for sustained weight loss (or so I read -- practicing it is another thing.) In fact, our beloved Bonnie used to advocate this kind of pace. Still feel like she's with us, and indeed I reckon she is! Anyway, hooray for you both!

Is that your weight or your EKG, Jack? ;) Great job! :D It's good to see the fluctuations don't get in the way of the final goal. :D Thanks for posting your graph.

Mary, Cooker, Wise, Cindy, Donna- Great job! I'm jealous. ;) (and currently eating chips and salsa... I know, bad Niki...)

Superbob- Don't get discouraged. You need to take care of your knees rather than worry about what the scale is saying. Keep in mind, your body needs nourishment to heal anything that's "broken." So don't kick yourself too hard (besides, that would just hurt your knees! ;) ). Good luck at your doctor appointment!

Good for you!

Now can you send some of that resolve down here? We are attending a lunch for my uncle's birthday this afternoon and it's going to be TOUGH! He's chosen a place called Babe's... Their specialty is fried chicken. The rest of the menu is fried as well (though I did just look online at their menu and saw "smoked chicken" listed. Never noticed that before). Frequently I just get a vegetable plate, since their veggies are delicious and "bottomless." Then I eat a bite or two of other people's meat. However, even their veggies are less than healthy. I think they prescribe to the Paula Dean school of cooking... the more butter the better! ;) While delicious, it's not exactly a great choice for people trying to watch what they eat. I have little hope of coming away unscathed! ;)

Enjoy your Mom's Day mulligans, Throw Downers! :D

Meanwhile, Superbob has had a revelation this Mother's Day Sunday morning.

Superbob has been lamenting that because of his knee, he is not going to be able to lose weight.

He needs to turn that around: He needs to lose more weight in order to be able to return to enjoying his long walks with Superdawg.

It can be done.

He's got previous experience -- he had moderate spinal stenosis (back misery) that was preventing him from walking a block at a time without pain. With the help of an angel of a physical therapist, he lost some weight, learned some stretching exercises, and was able to walk pain-free again.

All that was before OHS.

Now, with arthritis of the knee beginning to take a toll, he's got to step it up again. He has lost one package of 20 pounds, basically. He needs now to lose another package of 20 pounds, and then another package of 20. With that much of a load off the knees, walking should be a joy again.

So Superbob is very grateful for the Throw Down being here. He snuck a peek at the scales this morning, and he was down 3 since the Friday weigh-in -- of course that doesn't really count. Need the sustained effort now: next goal lose another package of 20.

Got to do it -- can't let the ravages of old age immobilize me. Got to be SUPERBOB!!!

I don't think I'll be taking my Mother's Day Mulligan. I finally stepped on the scales this morning - I'm down 4 lbs. I think I'll fill up on salads and protein and then let myself have a little something sweet.

Great job Superbob! I said before - you can't keep a good Superbob down.

Sure wish we all lived close by. We'd lose 5 lbs each time we got together - just from the laughing!

Woo hoo! :D Go Karlynn!!! :D :D

As for me... not a mom, so no mulligan for me? :( Maybe next year? ;)

Today we will be spending the day at my MIL's house. Our gift to her a year ago was the promise of a grill when she had the space for it. Now she does, so we plan to pick one up today and then bring over the fixin's for a meal. Wish me luck! ;)

Niki, Cooker, Mary, Donna, Sumo, Cindy and Wise: Way to go! You should all be very proud!

...and KARLYNN! Woohoo for you! See, it's okay to get on the scales once in a while!

Marguerite, I like your "half" notion; I'll bet it works. Sounds like your doctor's a keeper.

I am so thankful for all of your company on this mission. You keep me accountable and motivated, both things I need for success. Keeping track of my progress and measuring against all of yours is very helpful for me.

As of Friday, I had lost a pound which brings my current weight to 142 (down from a starting weight in August of 179). I have had a very FULL weekend..."FULL" as in full of fun, full of food, and a very FULL tummy! I dare not step on the scale now. I only hope I weigh 142 again next Friday!

Some of my weekend's highlights (to make you all jealous AND understanding of any backsliding...:D): Belgian waffles with raspberry sauce and homemade whipped cream and eggs benedict for breakfast today; dinner last night of beef tenderloin and Maine lobster tail with green beans, mashed potatoes, chive biscuits and bananas foster; lunch yesterday of angus beef burger with O'brien potatoes, deviled eggs and to-die-for chocolate covered brownies.... (Forgive me, friends for my cruelty; I will desist, but I could go on! My Mother's Day gift of hand dipped truffles is calling, so I must go!)

Well, I'm taking a mulligan.

My niece made this dessert that I just couldn't do a small sliver on. It was a combo chocolate chip cook/cheese cake thing. You use rolls of choc chip cookie dough and make a cheese cake filling to put between the layers of choc chip cookie dough and then bake it. It really was better than sex. I'm not kidding.:eek::D

As Mothers day fades the damage is done but not to the extent as I expected.....Being late for church I skipped breakfast ......

Lunch was hamburgers on the grill with tots and cake and pie to finish it up....Dinner with friends...prime rib, pig picking, all the fixings and of course several southern desserts that most would kill for......

I am really happy about the control I had....I sampled but did not get stuffed so all in all I think I am making progress in the choices I make.....

As I said, we got my MIL a grill today, then Nathan did a trial run on it to show her how to use it... YUMMY! Steak, shrimp, chicken fried rice, and grilled pineapple for desert... Mmmmm... I was comfortably satisfied when I finished my meal. Then came the pineapple. I cannot resist grilled pineapple. But at least it was a healthy desert? ;)

Home from Seattle. Help! Everything I ate had way too much salt in it and I feel like a blimp!! At the game, no hot dogs, but we were sitting just 100 feet from a barbecue stand and finally couldn't resist and chowed down. That and some Mexican one night (oh those yummy salty chips and a salt-rimmed Margarita (or 2)). Then some Vietnamese food and I really avoided the dipping sauces (fish sauce is SO salty) but still..... And unfortunately, I had a recent appointment with and talked my regular doctor into letting me lower my blood pressure med dose by half since my annual with the Cardio is tomorrow afternoon (give the lower dose a quick and controlled check). The salt has got my blood pressure up and the meds aren't as strong and I had really wanted to saunter into the cardio's office in the 120's and have her be okay with the lower dose. With a few more months of exercise and weight loss, I'm hoping to get off of them completely.

So I had some old flourisimide (?) pills lying around and I took 1/2 of one hoping to lose the water gain. I'll take a B-complex vitamin tonight, too and probably be pee-ing all night!!! Won't that help me lose a few pounds and help the BP normalize somewhat?? Or am I just being blonde??? :p;) And who am I fooling anyway....I suppose.....with my hormone changes with menopause and both parents with high blood pressure.....but damn.....123/67 just doesn't seem high!!! I want to know what my "new" heart is doing by itself. Ya know??

Okay. Rant over. Any and all comments, chidings, teasing appreciated.

Marguerite! Settle down, gal :D Did the BBQ at the M's game set you off? Come on, a major league ballgame is an occasion that merits a yummy treat -- if not a hot dog with the works, then some delicacy. (Rachael Ray had a recent show on the best of ballpark food.) Most of us only go to a game on special occasion -- such is to be enjoyed.

As for a BP of 123/67, that is just about ideal, as I understand it.

Cheers!

Thanks, Cooker and Superbob!!!!

I know, even my regular doctor said, it's perfect. So I'm hoping that the cardio will too. So it wasn't me who was up pee-ing all night, but our dog who got completely off schedule at the kennel and had me up twice to walk him around for relief! At 5am the robins were out on top of fence posts "kareeuuwwing" their pretty little morning trills. My favorite time of day...wonder why I sleep through it on purpose every day!

BTW. I don't drink diet sodas, but a friend of mine said she noticed that when she suddenly stopped drinking them her rings got very loose. She thinks that there is salt/sodium in diet drinks. If that is true, then they should be on every heart patient's no-no list. Anyone have a can of diet soda around to see if that's correct?

Okay! Until I get this blood pressure thing addressed, no more quiche with my no more mocha...no more salty chips.....no more barbecue....no more Subway hot Philly....no more grocery store roasted chicken (cheated on my salad last night when we got home and used one...wayway salty!!)

And Walk, walk walk walk!!!

Have a great week everyone!

Wait a minute, whoa....what's wrong with the grocery store roasted chicken? Just bought one to save DW (or God forbid, me:eek:) from cooking tonight. Isn't a baked chicken a pretty good choice? Superbob also bought all kind of diet-friendly snacking items (he hopes) -- unsalted almonds, baby carrots, and Jif-to-go peanut butter -- the little packs for dipping. I can allow myself one little pack a day -- beats eating untold amounts of peanut butter by spoon straight out of a jar. :p Peanut butter is Superbob's kryptonite unless controlled to small doses. :)

Superbob has never been instructed by any of his doctors to control sodium particularly (though he has learned from you all that he probably should be). Superbob does do a good bit of label-reading, checking particularly for sugars and of course calories (plus trans fats etc)....

As for sodium, I see the grocery store's label states that one serving of the store-roasted chicken has 290 mg of sodium, or 12 percent of daily value. That seems not terribly high for the evening entree compared to some other prepared foods -- for example, this little can of black-eyed peas (a Southern staple) I have in my hand (hawked as a "fat-free food") has 380 mg of sodium per serving. And a Campbell's tomato soup has 530 mg of sodium per serving.

So Superbob rises to the defense of the grocery-roasted chicken --- geez, ladies, Superbob has to eat something or he won't be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! :p:p:p

I have no problem with salt....it make DW retain water like a camel:eek:...some peeps have more probs that others......It does seem to slow weight loss if I eat a lot of it....but as SB says, it is in everything and southern food seems to be the worst.

I wonder if women are more sensitive to salt??

I'm very sensitive to it. If I have too much I actually still huff and puff at the top of the stairs. I had a nurse at cardiac rehab explain it all to me once, but not being of the medical pesuasion it went in one ear and out the other. It is not good for us heart patients.

Soups are notorious for high salt. It improves the bland taste that broth would otherwise have. That is why homemade is so much better for you. I'm amazed that your storebought chicken had the sodium content posted on it!! I think that before they roast them they sometimes soak them in a brine of sorts (that really permeates the whole bird) and then they salt the skin of course (which we're supposed to toss out, but why buy the chicken if you can't have the nice fatty, crunchy skin??)

My problem this weekend was that everything was overloaded with sodium. Not just one meal....every meal for 3 days. So that's why I was uncomfortable.

But! My cardio had an emergency and rescheduled, so I have a week to get my BP calmed down now anyway!

Did anyone ever come up with a sodium reading on a can of diet soda? Just curious.

Salads and cereal all week for me!

Carry on everyone!

I just went to look (have some diet Coke left over from when my aunt came at Christmas). It said there is 40 mg in the whole can of soda. At the top of the can it said "very low sodium." So I don't know if it's normally that low or if this can happens to be? However, keep in mind 40 mg is still more than the 0 mg in water or tea (which is what I drink)! ;) Somehow I doubt one can of diet soda is going to cause too much of a problem...

Thanks, Niki. Wonder what a normal soda has! I'll check. I was just curious since someone who drinks the diet sodas regularly noticed such a difference in her hands (ring size) when she stopped drinking them. Just something for anyone who keeps them as part of their steady diet to consider. Personally I cannot do NutraSweet or any of the other sweeteners at all....they all trigger room altering migraines in me.

And then Mother's Day came and my niece made a dessert that was my 2 favorite sweet things combined - Chocolate Chip cookies and cheese cake. Not to be confused with Choc Chip cheese cake. This dessert was the devil's work, no doubt.

I am climbing the walls - just "jonesing" for a fix! I just spent the morning out in my side yard clearing out millions of little seedling weed trees and leaves. I'm trying to work through the "pain". So far, no success. I almost jumped a kindergartener walking by with a cookie.

At the risk of the Ref coming after me (I might be able to out run her. If I can't, I'll curl up in a fetal position and cry like a little girlie-man.) Here is the recipe that Cooker requested in a moment of weakness. I recommend that it only be made when you know that a large group will be consuming it, or you can make it, have one piece and then take it to church for coffee hour.

Chocolate Chip Cream Bars

3 tubes choc. chip cookie dough (recommend Nestle Tollhouse)
3 8 oz pkgs cream cheese (softened)
2 eggs
1 C. sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Hey Guys , I got a problem: My favorite no-no is ice cream. But my husband
insists on buying it..... AND leaving it in the freezer for over a week!
Whats a girl to do?? I gained 1.5 lbs this month already. It looks like I will
never fit into my size 9 again:( But I still have hope and they hang untouched in my closet.....just 17 lbs to go!

Dina, have you tried Breyer's low-sugar version? Learned about it in my diabetes management class. I swear it tastes as good as the regular ice cream and it's low cal. Just a thought. :)

I can vouch for that. There are a lot of good lite ice creams these days. The Breyers version is delicious.

Honestly, I've had ice cream almost every day since I started WW just over a month ago. So far, I've lost weight each week. You can fit those goodies in and you don't have to starve to fit them in either. :D

I guess my problem is that once I take a bite...I turn into some uncontrollable
monster! Im not that way with cake ,cookies or anything else , just icecream.
So the low cal helps but if you eat a qrtr gallon .....:o
I think I will just get my own apartment OR go home to my mother-she's
always on a diet and hypothyroid like me. And of course my husband has no weight problem at all:mad:
Well congrats to you all who have managed to lose,I hope to follow soon,
Dina

I've also made the adjustment to lite Hellman's Mayo, 1 percent lowfat milk, and no-sugar-added preserves. Unfortunately, no one's come up with a lite peanut butter that will work for me yet -- got to have the real thing (but trying to control quantities)....:)

Spread 1 ½ tubes of cookie dough onto botton of 9x13 pan
Mix cream cheese, eggs, sugar and vanilla and spread on top of first layer.
Slice the remaining 1 ½ tubes of cookie dough evenly on top of cream cheese layer.
Bake at 350 for 55 minutes.

I think an appropriate "reward" for Karlynn for posting this rich recipe would be a huge plate of fudge brownies! :p:D:)

Fudge brownies given as a reward = 0 calories and 0 carbohydrates and a full day of protein.:D

Will that be UPS or FedEx I should look for?

You could have had a scoop of lite vanilla ice cream and erased all of the points in those brownies, but Noooo!! ;)
