View Full Version : Evil eye!

My INR came back a bit low last week so the nurse told me to up the dose by an extra 1/2 for just one day to get it back up where they like to see it. The next day I ran a bit harder than normal. I felt really good, so I pushed the last mile of a four mile run as fast as I could.
This morning I get up and my wife goes, YIKES! What happened to your eye? Apparently a blood vessel had burst and the entire lower half was no longer showing any white. It was completely blood red. Everybody I saw today was totally grossed out by the red eye. It doesn't hurt, just feels a bit strange.
I've gotten used to burst capillaries on the cheekbones after a hard workout and this isn't even the first time I've had the red eye. I know it'll settle out in a few days but it's a warning that those blood thinners are powerful sh*t.

When I was on Coumadin, I also burst blood vessels in my eye, and it was neither because of the INR out of range or from overdoing it athletically (I am not an athlete).

Hey, as long as we can agree running had nothing to do with it! :)
I like your spirit...

I too had a problem with a red bloody eye, and as I am still only 4 months post-op (as of yesterday) I went to a prompt care clinic. Doc there sad a burst blood vessel, not much they could do, just keep an eye on it (pun intended :D ) and if it got worse, go back.
I of course did all the silly things that people on warfarin do - when I was discharged from hospital, I insisted that pick up Rxs before going home, and that I go in to talk with pharmacist; also made sure I picked up a few packages of various sizes of bandaids and those thick gauze pads that are used to stop bleeding. Never had to use any of them, but I really thought I was going to bleed like the proverbial stuck pig all over the place, all the time. Of course, that was before I found this place ... but I digress, sorry, I will shut up now

Hehe, there is that word "Bloodthinner" again. It doen't change the visocity of your blood at all, it merely slows it's ability to clot, therefore tis an anticoagulant and not a blood thinner. :D
I'm trying to understand a "One time adjustment up". That likely didn't do a darn thing.

Well then if Coumadin didn't cause it, unfortunately for Tom Price and me it has to have been the hard running that did it.

Sumo believe it or not, in can happen for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I've seen people just wake up that way. I think it has to do with intraocular pressures but I can't prove that either.

Just out of curiosity, did you ever have the redeye thing before you started on coumadin?
I don't think so, but I've been on it for 21 years and I can't remember anything that far back. I can only recall a couple red eye episodes in the last 3-5 years.

Jack......I second what Ross said. I dated a girl in college and it happened to her father twice. No warfarin use, no BP issues etc. it just happened. It looked like hell and took a while to clear up but no issues other than cosmetic. Sorry this has happened.

The worst one of those eye things I ever saw was in the mirror after taking a hit with the point end of a ski pole between my eye and the inside of the orbit of my eye socket. Fortunately, the hit broke the orbit rather than taking my eye. My eye turned completely black for several weeks along with the left side of my face. Thank God the ski patrol guys had some adhesive tape I could use to tape my face back together and finish my ski day.
Keep running!
