    Different strokes...

This may sound a bit weird - but I have sensitivity to Zyrtec - and I have a friend who has the same issue: One or both of your eyes loses vision - things just go black. You get numbness in your mouth and part of the face near your mouth. You might also get numbness in your fingers. It only...

    3 potential choices

Sometimes genetics seem to add to the stroke risk. My father died of a stroke. His mother had a stroke. From what I was told, his father died of a stroke (he was in his 50s). My mother's father died of a 'heart attack.' With the history of strokes on my father's side of the family, I expect...

Would anyone out there like an XS?

My offer has been buried in other message threads, so I'll ask here as its own message: I'm trimming my supply (actually just a few) of XS meters because I don't need a backup of a backup of a, well, backup (I'm not sure how many I've actually got) meter. In the last month or so, I got another...

    Warfarin Protocol Initiated!

I've been testing with XS meters on and off since 2014 (there were a few years when I used the Coag-Sense), and I STILL waste strips. The results on meters can't always be expected to match other meters. If your meter is new, I'm sure that it went through QC testing before it was shipped. I...

Moving to LA - cardiologist recs?

I don't know where in Southern California you're moving - this is a LARGE area. My cardiologist - an electrocardiologist - is Leo Polosajian. He's located in Reseda. He's not into running up big bills unnecessarily - he has his own surgical center so he can do some procedures without...

    INR Home Testing

I know this isn't the place to post this, but can I interest anyone in an old XS? My doctor said a patient left it there because it was 'inaccurate.' the one test that I ran on it was just fine. I think the patient wanted EXACT match to the labs. If so, send me a private message.

    Warfarin Protocol Initiated!

10 9 8 ??? WTF ? I wouldn't have ANY confidence in this clinic. They don't seem to have ANY idea what they're doing. If you need 10, fine - in three days or so, you'll be in range -- then start to drop lower because your dosing is less. If you can self test, get a meter (I can help you out...

    INR Home Testing

Leno can afford it. He even drives them sometimes. Plus, he's making money doing TV shows based on his collecting. It's paying off well for him. I've been trying for years to get a TV show about my three or four (maybe more, maybe less) INR testers. Still, no bites. (Actually I haven't tried...

Did I sell out? Not exactly

Carolinemc - self testing isn't for everyone. If you're more comfortable at your doctor's office than self testing at home, more power to you. You should make sure your doctor knows you want to test weekly (some older protocols will set your tests 2 weeks or more apart - if your INR is pretty...

    INR Home Testing

Gee. It's a good idea to have a backup meter? Who knew? (I have a few CoaguChek XS meters - an XS Pro - color display, touch screen, really overkill, but only about $40 on eBay, one or two XS that I got on eBay for $29 or so (and I've given a few away), and one that I got at my doctor's office...

    Traveling after surgery?

I had my surgery (St. Jude implant) on August 21 1991. Six weeks later, I was back at work as a reporter, flying from L.A. to San Jose (California, not Puerto Rico). I had no problems with compression, decompression, etc. I didn't even really think about it.

Did I sell out? Not exactly

Reliastaon has the InRange for $549 with no strips. They also sell the meter with 24 or 48 strips. If you're a first time buyer, you get 10% off your first purchase. If you have the money, you might consider using the discount for meter and strips -- I am NOT affiliated with Reliaston. I just...

    INR Home Testing

CoaguChek XS strips will be available for a LONG time. There are way too many meters out there - not just self-testers, but clinics, doctor's offices, etc. - for them to discontinue the strips without a LOT of advance notice. I don' t know if the 'new' strips will somehow have a code (or...

    Best mechanical valve?

IIRC, in 1991 when I got my St. Jude valve in the aortic position, I did bank a liter of blood pre-op.

Did I sell out? Not exactly

The push to an expensive and cumbersome system seems to caused by Roche - the manufacturer of the InRange and CoaguChek meters. They don't sell directly to consumers, requiring that they use a service to get their meters. It makes the services a LOT of money. Perhaps Roche wants to avoid...

    Warfarin Protocol Initiated!

I usually change my dose by .5 at a time. This usually works for me....I don't mind going slightly below 4.0 - I can adjust to bring it down. What I DO mind is somehow going below 2.0. Small dosage adjustments have worked well for me.

    Warfarin Protocol Initiated!

There was a time when doctors wouldn't even prescribe a meter for 3 (or is it 6) months after surgery. This is for the reasons listed above -- your dosage won't be stable until your body heals a bit more. FWIS - diet may not be as important as it was once thought to be.

15 years self testing and self managing

I was referred to a service that apparently only charges $90 a month, including rental, reporting to the prescribing doctor and, I think 4 or 6 strips a month. If you need more strips, they charge a very high $50 for 6. I can get 48 for abouat $225. $1000 for a meter is WAY TOO HIGH. I own my...

    Warfarin Protocol Initiated!

I did the same thing that Pellicle describes: When I was required to go to a 'coumadin clinic' about 12 years ago, I had already been self testing and self managing for about three years. I answered the usual questions about change in diet and other stuff that my affect my INR, then they used...

    Warfarin Protocol Initiated!

I second Pellicle's post: 'Dopes.' These guys clearly don't have a clue. My advice: go somewhere else. Even better, get your own meter ASAP, and start self-testing. There are folks here (Pellicle in particular) who can help you navigate your dosing. You might have to find a doctor who can...
